ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Montana State University Billings Women's Basketball team won their game over Central Washington University on Thursday, Jan. 16, 72-44.
With a cancelled airplane flight yesterday, a drive to Belgrade last night, an early flight out of Bozeman this morning to Seattle, renting vans and then driving to Central Washington, the Yellowjackets had a tough road to get to the game. The disrupted travelling plans didn't seem to faze the student-athletes one bit, as MSU Billings (11-5, 4-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) cruised to a victory over Central Washington at Nicholson Pavilion.
It was MSUB from the beginning as the Yellowjackets started the game with an 18-4 run and from then on never let Central Washington (6-9, 1-6 GNAC) get to within more than 10. At the end of the first half and the beginning of the second, Central Washington put together a 13-0 run to get the score to 31-41, but that would be as close as the Wildcats would come in the game.
"It was a great win for us tonight," Head Coach
Kevin Woodin said. "Any GNAC road win is a great accomplishment, so I was really proud of the way our players played. I am also proud of their response to some adversity. You know we had our flight cancelled and had to drive to Bozeman and fly out game- day. Our whole routine was different, but I never heard anyone complaining, we just went forward and gave a great effort tonight."
MSU Billings shot 40 percent from the field for the game. The team led by as many as 28 points. The Yellowjackets outscored the Wildcats 26-12 in the paint, shot better from the three-point arc 41 percent to 26 percent, but where the MSUB really shined in the game was on the glass. MSUB outrebounded CWU 57-35 on the night. It was the sixth highest total by a GNAC team this season and the Yellowjackets highest total this year so far.
"Our first half I thought we played very well on both ends of the court, both offensively and defensively," Coach Woodin stated. "We were sharing the ball well. I thought we had a good balance of scoring; inside, outside, and through transition which was the key to our offensive success. Defensively, we had great ball pressure and rebounded well. When we do those things, we have better success on the floor."
All ten players for the Yellowjackets went into the game, and all ten players put up points for MSUB.
"Give Central credit," Coach Woodin said. "The team made a great run in the second half to make it close, but I thought we responded well. The team regrouped and got a good spark off the bench from different people."
The Yellowjackets non-starters had 23 of the 72 points for MSUB.
Central Washington's leading scorer was Courtney Johnson; she was 3-7 from the field for nine points. Jasmine Parker had eight-points. Jessica VanDyke had a team-high six rebounds.
For Montana State University Billings,
Janiel Olson had a team-high and a new career-high with 19 points. Her previous record was 18 in the game against Alaska Fairbanks earlier in the season. Olson had a double-double on the night as she also had a team-high 13 rebounds.
"Janiel had a fantastic game tonight," Coach Woodin said. "She was great on the boards as she does so well, and then had a great offensive game tonight as well."
Bobbi Knudsen was 7-9 from the field and finished with 17 points. Knudsen also had six assists, five rebounds, and four steals in the game.
Next up for the Yellowjackets is a game against Northwest Nazarene University. Montana State University Billings will face NNU on Saturday, Jan. 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM. Live video and live stats for the game can be found at MSUBSports.com.
