Bombs Away: Yellowjackets Sink 14 three’s in Win

Box Score BURNABY, B.C. –The Montana State University Billings Men's basketball team caught fire and reached the century mark defeating Simon Fraser University 100-70 Thursday night. 

The Jackets(8-7, 4-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) finished with six players in double figures.  Austin Hudson led all scorers with 25 points doing most of his damage in the low block.  He also pulled down 12 rebounds to register his third double-double of the year. 

Marc Matthews scored 15 points which is a new career high, including a thunderous dunk in the closing seconds of the game to break the 100 point barrier for MSUB.  Chase Miller scored 14 points going 4-7 from behind the arc. 

Devon Wallace and Jonathan Mesghna both scored 12 point each.  All of Mesghna's points were three's as he went 4-6 from behind the arc.  Wallace also five rebounds and four assists. Connor Donaldson scored 10 points as he knocked down two three point shots as well for MSUB.  Kalob Hatcher kept pace with his season average of 6.6 assists, dishing out seven dimes while scoring eight points.

The Yellowjackets shot a season high 52.8 percent from the floor and a blistering season high 51.9 percent from three point range (14-27).  

MSUB also played shout defense as well, allowing SFU to shoot only 40.6 percent and continued to shut down the three point shot, swarming SFU on the perimeter and holding them to 15 percent on the night from three point territory. 

Sango Niang was the Clan's leading scorer finishing with 19 points.  Taylor Dunn would finish with 17 points.  SFU would finish with two other players hitting double figures. 

MSUB's bench buried the SFU bench scoring 33 points to SFU's two.  The Jackets narrowly outscored the Clan 42-40 in points in the paint.  MSUB out rebounded SFU 47-32, but SFU forced 10 Jacket turnovers while giving up eight of their own.  

The Yellowjackets came out hot and opened up a 30-9 start within the first nine minutes of play.  MSUB shot 7-10 form three point land to take a 56-30 lead into the break. 

SFU(7-7, 0-6 GNAC) would never get close while the largest Yellowjacket lead was 41 points, 87-46 with nine minutes left in the game as they would cruse to the 100-70 victory.     
 
"I thought our guys played very mature tonight," head coach Jamie Stevens said.  Simon Fraser has some talent and they have played all their opponents tough this season.  Our guys were really engaged on defense and played with good effort.  We also rebounded well and shared the ball well while on offense." 

MSUB next plays nationally ranked Western Washington (19) who is coming off of a 76-60 loss to Seattle Pacific University.   The loss was WWU first home loss in 36 games.  The game is scheduled to begin at 8:00 MT on Saturday.  Stats and live video can be found at MSUBSPORTS.COM.
