SEATTLE – The Montana State University Billings Women's Basketball team lost their game against Seattle Pacific University on Saturday Jan. 11, 57-63.
It was a hard-fought game broadcast live on ROOT SPORTS for the women's basketball teams of MSUB and SPU. It was the first Great Northwest Athletic Conference game of the week in the season and was available as a tv broadcast for fans of both schools.
Montana State University Billings (10-5, 3-2 GNAC) played some tough defense against Seattle Pacific University, but was unable to convert in the short-court as the team was 21-63 from the field for an overall shooting percentage of 33 percent.
"Give credit to SPU I thought they really played hard today," Head Coach
Kevin Woodin said. "I felt they also made more hustle plays then we did."
Seattle Pacific University (9-4, 2-3 GNAC) shot 41.5 percent from the field and 43 percent from three-point territory.
"I thought that we played good enough defensively to win," Coach Woodin said. "Offensively we struggled at times. We made enough three-pointers to be effective, but we didn't shoot the ball well from two-point range and we need to do better on those type of baskets."
MSU Billings put together several good runs, including three three-point baskets in a row by
Annie DePuydt,
Austin Hanser, and
Quinn Peoples in the middle of the second half, but each time Seattle Pacific would answer back. The Yellowjackets would tie the game with 3:11 left on the clock as
Bobbi Knudsen was fouled. She would step to the line making both baskets, tying the game at 53-all. It would be back and forth for both teams for the three final minutes, but in the end SPU would prevail with several clutch free-throws by Katie Bensen and a lay-up by Suzanna Ohlsen.
"We were just never able to put together a run," Coach Woodin stated. "For much of the game, we were playing catch-up a lot of the time, but our players didn't quit, they gave a good effort. SPU just made more plays down the stretch than us."
Seattle Pacific's Bensen would finish with a double-double and game high 18 points with 10 rebounds. Ohlsen had 16 points, five assists, and two steals. Betsey Kingman had a season-high 15 points.
The league's leading scorer in MSUB's
Bobbi Knudsen was 4-16 on the night and finished with 12 points and a game-high 6 assists.
Chelsea Banis was the team's leading scorer, she finished 7-11 from the field and 15 points.
Janiel Olson was the game's top-rebounder with 14.
MSU Billings outrebounded SPU 40-36. They also had more three-point baskets 9-7. MSUB was 6-8 from the free-throw line. Eight free-throw attempts is a new-season low for the Yellowjackets.
Next week Montana State University Billings has two road-conference games. They will travel to Central Washington University on Thursday, Jan. 16. Tip-off for that game is at 7 PM Pacific Time. The team will then face No. 18 Northwest Nazarene on Saturday, Jan. 18. That game is also scheduled to begin at 7 PM Pacific Time. Both games will have live video and live stats available at MSUBSports.com.
"Next week we will need to bounce back," Coach Woodin said. "We have two tough road games against CWU and NNU so we look forward to that."
