Notre Dame de Namur Ends Tournament for MSUB Softball

Box Score

TURLOCK, Calif. – In the second semifinal of the Platinum Bracket at the 12th annual Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno, the Notre Dame de Namur softball rallied for a 5-2 win over Montana State University Billings Sunday.

After trailing 2-0 in the 74th game of the tournament, the Argonauts (22-15, 12-8 PacWest Conference) scored the final five runs against MSUB to advance to the Platinum Bracket Championship with Academy of Art. Sammy McConvey limited Montana State Billings to four hits, as she improved to 9-6 on the mound. The senior gave up no earned runs and no extra base hits.

Sylia Honne went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Mary Ortega was 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Courtney Azevedo and Lucinda Knudson both had one RBI as well.

The Yellowjackets' Aubrey Conceicao opened the scoring in the bottom of the first off of NDNU error. Another Argonaut error scored Samantha Jo Everett in the inning. In the top of the third inning, Ortega's double to right center scored Amanda Wallach. Ortega crossed the plate when the next batter, Azevedo doubled up the middle.

Montana State Billings scattered three runners on base over the rest of the game, but three more runs by Notre Dame de Namur in the top of the sixth sealed the second meeting between the programs all-time.

Rose Harrington and Nicole Wilkerson both had an RBI for the Yellowjackets. Harrington was 1-for-3 and Breanna Wilson went 1-for-2. Amanda Todd (2-6) was credited with the loss after pitching the final two innings. The Billings' native allowed no hits and no earned runs, but three Argonauts crossed the plate in the sixth and the seventh innings. Mary Grace Bywater started the game for MSUB.

“We came out strong in the first inning but after that we didn't have much offensive production,” MSU Billings' Head Coach Lisa Allen said. “On the defensive side, we had one bad inning that let them score three runs. We are still learning that we have to compete each and every pitch of the game. It will be nice to get back home and have more home games to finish out the GNAC conference schedule.”

The Yellowjackets (9-23, 7-8 GNAC) return home and host Dickinson State in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats will be available on MSUBSports.com.
