BILLINGS, Mont. – On one pitch, Simon Fraser University softball qualified for next week's inaugural Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships, and Montana State University Billings was eliminated.
Nicole Ratel hit a walk-off grand slam in the first game, which was a postponed game that was picked up in the bottom of the second inning from March 5, to clinch a postseason berth for the Clan (25-21, 15-9 Great Northwest Athletic Conference). The defending GNAC champion and preseason favorite Yellowjackets were knocked out of the postseason race with that 11-2 loss. Ironically, it's one-day shy of exactly a year from when MSUB won the conference crown with a win over SFU.
Entering the day, MSU Billings had a chance to qualify for the GNAC Championships, which it will be hosting after winning last season's conference title. The Yellowjackets needed to win all five of its final regular season contests to clinch a spot, but continuing a game when they were already down 6-2 when play resumed, proved too much of a hole.
Simon Fraser grabbed a six-inning, 11-2, decision in the first game of Saturday's originally scheduled doubleheader. MSUB (11-28, 9-13 GNAC) bounced back with a thrilling 7-5 victory in the nightcap. A day before Senior Day, Yellowjacket senior,
Tanya Eckles, drove a ball over the centerfield fence for a walk-off three-run home run. It was the first home run for the Peoria, Ariz. native this season.
Montana State Billings'
Emily Osborn hit a home run in each of the three games. She was 3-for-6 with two RBI in the final two games. Seniors
Rose Harrington and
Nicole Wilkerson also finished the day with three hits.
Mary Grace Bywater (3-4) grabbed the game three victory on the mound. She allowed four earned runs on 10 hits.
The Clan's Kelsie Hawkins (14-8) controlled the mound in the completion of the halted game. She struckout nine Yellowjackets, and allowed two runs on three hits in six innings. Cara Lukawesky (9-11) won the second game after she pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six.
The Yellowjackets welcome Western Washington (22-22, 11-11) Sunday for Senior Day. Eckles, Harrington, and Wilkerson will all be playing their final regular season games at Montana State Billings. The doubleheader will be the final games for both the Yellowjackets and WWU, and will have live stats on MSUBSports.com. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., following Senior Day honors.
