Yellowjackets Face Must-Win Situation in Final Weekend of Regular Season

BILLINGS, Mont. – The defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion, Montana State University Billings' softball team needs to win its final five regular season games and hope for some losses from other teams to qualify for this year's conference tournament.

The bad news first, MSUB (10-26, 8-11 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) begins the weekend with the continuation of a postponed game with Simon Fraser down 6-2 in the second inning. The good news, all five games are at home where the Yellowjackets have had success this season. MSU Billings and the Clan had their second game halted in the bottom of the second inning with two outs, with SFU leading 6-2. Simon Fraser's Danielle Raison is on second base and Lauren Kolanko was about to bat. Jessyka MacDonald had been announced to come in to pitch for MSUB. The Yellowjackets will be the designated visiting team in that game.

At home MSU Billings is 4-4 this season, but has totaled 78 runs in those eight games. In the other 28 contests, the Yellowjackets have scored 71 runs. That's an average of 9.5 runs at Bjorgum Field, and 2.5 away from Billings.

Simon Fraser (23-20, 13-8 GNAC) has fell in four of its last six contests. The Clan opened the conference schedule 7-0, but is 6-8 since. SFU won the bronze bracket at the Tournament of Champions. In their lone full meeting this season, Simon Fraser won its home opener over Montana State University Billings, 7-1, March 5. Lauren Mew went 3-for-4 for the Clan. The senior had two RBI with a home run. Bouchard also drove in a pair of runs and had two doubles in the conference opener for SFU. In Game 2, Montana State Billings opened the scoring in the top of the first with a two run home run against SFU starter Hawkins. The Clan responded in the bottom of the second with six runs before play was suspended.

The Yellowjackets welcome Western Washington (22-22, 11-11) Sunday for Senior Day. Tanya Eckles, Rose Harrington, and Nicole Wilkerson will all be playing their final regular season games at Montana State Billings. Harrington led the GNAC in base hits last season with 71 and was one of four .400 hitters in the league, and she was named second team All-West Region. Wilkerson is an All-Conference catcher and has 58 hits in her Yellowjacket career. She has seven home runs at MSUB, five coming this season. Eckles has appeared in 27 games as a Yellowjacket.
