Deluge and Delay Didn’t Slow Down No. 23 Saints

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BILLINGS, Mont. – A downpour and its subsequent rain delay didn't prevent a sweep for the No. 23 Saint Martin's University softball team at Montana State University Billings Saturday, 18-15 and 12-3.

The Saints (30-11, 12-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) grabbed their 30th win of the season, and moved atop the conference standings. SMU, which amidst its best season in program history, totaled a two-game series program-record 30 runs on 28 hits. The first game had a rain delay a little over an hour, and the second game finished in five innings.

Saint Martin's Joslyn Eugenio was 6-for-9 on the day, with six RBI and scoring five times. The senior had a home run and a double. Lacey McGladrey was 5-for-9. She scored four runs and had five RBI. McGladrey hit a home run and two doubles. Sam Munger (15-6) and Taylor Bakos (13-5) both picked up wins on the mound.

The Yellowjackets (9-25, 7-10 GNAC) are now 1.5 games out of fourth place in the conference standings with seven GNAC games remaining. Emily Osborn was 4-for-5 at the plate Saturday.

The combined 33 runs in Game 1 were the most in MSUB program history. The previous high was 32 runs in a 20-12 Yellowjacket win over Great Falls on April 22, 2007. The Saints opened the first game with three runs in the top of the first inning, four in the third, and three more runs in the fourth. The rain began in the second inning and slowly affected the gameplay and field conditions.

The Saints committed four errors in the first three innings, and left 14 runners on base in the game. The teams combined for 17 walks, seven wild pitches, three hit batters and two passed balls. The Yellowjackets scored nine runs in the bottom of the fourth on just three hits recording seven walks and scoring on two wild pitches to pull within a run at 10-9.

In the top of the fifth, SMU added two runs to take a 12-9 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, MSU Billings took its first lead after trailing by 10 runs. A two-run double to left field by Aubrey Conceicao tied the game at 12, and two batters later, Rose Harrington drove Conceicao in with a single to center field. The Saints tied the score in the following inning. Montana State Billings answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Katie Schermele drove in Caryn Perrigo and Osborn stole home.

Saint Martin's scored five runs on five hits in the rain-delayed top of the seventh. McGladrey hit a two-run home run over the center field fence to give the Saints a one-run lead. At that point, the umpires deemed the field unplayable. Rain stopped and the field was repaired for play after an hour and 13-minute delay. Saint Martin's added three more runs in the inning. SMU then retired the Yellowjackets in order in the bottom of the seventh to finish the game.

Montana State Billings left five runners on base and committed four errors. Jesskya MacDonald (4-4) struck out three batters, while giving up two earned runs on seven hits.

The second game started two hours later than its originally scheduled time. MSUB jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, but the Saints responded scoring three runs in the top of third behind a three-run home run from Eugenio.

The Saints' bats came alive in the top of the fifth inning, scoring nine runs on eight hits. SMU strung together six consecutive hits in the inning and Pocklington put the game out of reach with a three-run home run over the left center wall.

Mary Grace Bywater (2-4) was credited with the loss. The sophomore gave up five earned runs on seven hits. The Yellowjackets travel to Central Washington next Saturday. Live stats will be on MSUBSports.com.
