BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Montana State University Billings' softball team grabbed a victory in a game that was delayed a day, but dropped the second of the doubleheader at Western Washington University Thursday.
The Yellowjackets (4-8, 3-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) completed Wednesday's delayed game with the victory behind
Emily Osborn's 2-for-4 performance at the plate. The sophomore drove in a pair of runs in the win.
Amanda Todd improved to 2-0 this season. The Billings native, pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and three earned runs. She struck out nine Vikings, and walked four others. She threw 139 pitches, 85 were strikes. Jenna DeRosier (4-2) was credited with the loss, allowing five earned runs in six innings.
In the first game, the Vikings opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Camille Depew scored on an Alexie Levin double.
The Yellowjackets responded with three runs in the top of the fourth.
Nicole Wilkerson doubled across one run, Osborn came home on a wild pitch and
Breanna Wilson scored the other run with a sacrifice fly.
Western Washington tied the game with two runs in the fourth. Jackie Rothenberger led off with a triple and scored on a two-out single by Depew. Cheyenne Best then scored on a Kristen Allen single. The delay in play occurred after the fourth inning, and then resumed Thursday in the fifth.
Rose Harrington opened the fifth inning with a single to second base. Three batters later, she was brought home with home run by Osborn. The two-run shot created the final margin, as Todd allowed one hit in the final 10 WWU batters.
In the second game, Anisa Wingsness tossed a two-hit shutout as Western Washington shut out Montana State Billings, 7-0. WWU's (9-7, 1-1 GNAC) Wingsness allowed just a leadoff bunt single to Osborn in the top of the fifth and a two-out double to
Brittney Sanders in the seventh. Wingsness struck out one and did not issue a walk.
Depew gave WWU a 1-0 lead in the second when she tripled and scored on a single by Kristen Allen. Levin hit a two-run homer in the third after Allen singled, and Kaleigh Keating tripled in the fourth and scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 advantage.
The Vikings also scored three runs in the sixth inning. Depew singled, stole second and third, and scored on an error; and Rachelle Berry and Lauren Bennett both had run-scoring singles.
Three Yellowjackets pitched in the second game, but
Jessica Campbell (0-3) picked up the loss. She allowed three earned runs and five hits in two innings.
Jessyka MacDonald tossed 2.2 innings, striking out four Vikings.
After playing errorless softball in the first game, MSUB was charged with two in the second. The Yellowjackets left just one runner on base in Game 2, while WWU stranded 10.
“In the first game, even though our game was delayed the team stayed in the game and did what they needed to do to get the win,” MSUB Head Coach
Lisa Allen said. “In Game 2, as a team we didn't show up to play and didn't make adjustments to their pitcher. We put too much pressure on ourselves by not producing on the offensive side.”
Montana State Billings continues its road trip at Western Oregon Friday. The doubleheader will have live stats on MSUBSports.com. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT.
