MSUB Softball Grabs First Win of Season at Stinger

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Montana State University Billings' softball team picked up a split on the second day of the fourth annual Desert Stinger tournament Saturday. The Yellowjackets fell to Metro State University of Denver, 17-10, and defeated Humboldt State University, 13-5.

After scoring nine runs through the first four games of the season, the Yellowjackets (1-5) scored 23 runs in their two games Saturday. MSUB had 21 hits in its 0-4 start, and 26 on the second day of the tournament.

“Our offense did very well today in both games,” MSUB Head Coach Lisa Allen said. “In the first game we just had too many errors and pitching mistakes. In the second game, we cleaned up our defense and Jessyka did a great job on the mound keeping Humboldt hitters at bay. We have one final game tomorrow and look forward to carrying this momentum into that game.”

In the first game against Metro State (Colo.), Susie Oury broke a MSU doubles in a single-game record. The sophomore had three doubles, along with a home run in the Roadrunner victory. She finished 4-of-5, as the team's 23 hits were just two shy of another school single-game record. Oury and Kelsey Tillery both had five RBI on four hits.

The Roadrunners (5-4) opened the game's scoring with an RBI double from Tillery in the top of the first inning. Chelsea Brew added an RBI single in the inning. The Yellowjackets responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double to right centerfield by Brittany Sanders.

Dani Sandel's double in the top of the second fueled a three-run inning for MSU. After allowing one run in the bottom half of the inning, the Roadrunners added five runs in the top of the third, to take a 10-4 lead. MSUB was held scoreless in its ensuing chance at the plate.

Two more runs on four hits stretched the score to 12-4 in the top of the fourth. Stephanie Dunham and Oury both hit home runs in the inning. MSU added another run in the fifth.

Trailing 13-4, Montana State Billings amassed six runs in the bottom of the fifth. Nicole Wilkerson homered over the left-center fence to score three runs. Rose Harrington chipped in a two RBI single down the right field line.

One more Roadrunner run in the top of the sixth, and a three-RBI double from Oury in the top of the seventh sealed the win for MSU.

Hailey Eisenhauer earned the win for Metro State, improving to 2-0 this season. She threw four innings, and allowed four earned runs. Amanda Roark was credited with the loss.

Harrington finished 3-of-5, netting four RBI. Wilkerson had three RBI. As a team, the Yellowjackets left 10 runners on base, and committed two errors. MSUB had 12 hits.

The Yellowjackets scored first in second game night-cap. After hitting a double to right-center, Aubrey Conceicao was brought in by a Sanders' single in the top of the first against Humboldt State. MSUB added another run in the top of third, but HSU (3-5) crossed the plate three times in the bottom half of the inning, while MSU Billings committed three errors.

In the fourth, the Yellowjackets' Breanna Sanders doubled to right-center, before being driven in by a Caryn Perrigo single. Perrigo would later score on a Cori Gammon single. Humboldt State took a 5-4 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the fifth.
