BILLINGS, Mont. – The No. 6 Seattle Pacific University men's basketball team held off Montana State University, 78-69, Saturday.
The Falcons (17-3, 10-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) were powered by a combined 40-point effort from David Downs and Cory Hutsen. Downs finished with 21 points, going 6-of-9 from the field, while Hutsen made eight of his nine shots. Patrick Simon contributed 10 points. Jobi Wall added game-highs of 10 rebounds and four assists.
After knocking off Montana State Billings, 81-56, in Seattle, the Falcons completing the season sweep with their first win in Billings in the last three tries. MSUB holds a dominate 21-7 record over Seattle Pacific in Billings all-time.
The Yellowjackets scored seven of the game's first 11 points, but had their final lead of the game at the 13:06 mark of the first half. A 9-0 run by SPU turned a 7-4 deficit into a 13-7 advantage over a three-minute span. A Simon three-pointer with 6:23 left in the first half gave the Falcons a 20-12 cushion. Seattle Pacific's largest lead stretched to 30-21 just before the half. SPU had a 30-24 halftime edge.
Neither team shot the ball well in the first half, as SPU was limited to 37 percent shooting from the field, while MSU Billings was 29 percent. The Falcons were 3-of-10 from three-point range, compared to MSUB's 3-for-14 shooting from behind-the-arc.
Montana State Billings continued its small run into the second half, and cut the lead to 30-28 two minutes in the period after a
Sam Johnson dunk. Leading by only three points at the 14:42 mark of the second half, Hutsen began his special night off of the bench. He made all 12 of SPU's points from 10:11 to 6:33, but his first basket of the game didn't come until the 14:11 mark of the second stanza. All 19 of Hutsen's points came in the second half.
Seattle Pacific dominated the glass, outrebounding MSUB, 40-22. The conference's best defense, SPU, held Montana State Billings to 38 percent from the field in the game. The Falcons finished at 48 percent. The Yellowjackets only committed four turnovers in the setback.
Omar McDade led MSUB (12-11, 5-6 GNAC) with 21 points, shooting 7-for-14 from the field, including making five of eight from behind-the-arc. Kalon Hatcher added 15 points and three assists.
Jarrell Crayton scored 11 and grabbed eight rebounds.
Devon Wallace and
David Arnold both had 10.
The Yellowjackets have four of their final six regular contests in Billings, beginning Thursday against Northwest Nazarene (Idaho) (10-11, 4-9) at 5:15 p.m. Earlier this season, MSUB held on for a 63-61 win at NNU. Live video and stats will be on MSUBSports.com.
