Billings, Mont. – Montana State Billings women's basketball team extend their win streak to four games as they defeat the University of Alaska Fairbanks 70-50, completing the series sweep over the Nanooks in 2012-13. The Yellowjackets improve to 15-5 overall, 9-3 in the GNAC.
MSUB was led by
Monica Grimsrud, who finished with a team high 12 points on 5-11 shooting. She also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots. The Jackets jumped out to an early 10 point lead and never looked back as they handed Fairbanks (2-18, 0-12) their 12
th loss of the season.
“We had a nice win and played very consistent; we got off to a good start offensively and defensively, and played a solid game,” stated head coach
Kevin Woodin. “Everyone contributed solid minutes and we knew we needed to guard them better this game than in our previous match-up.”
All five starters scored seven or more points as senior guard
Brooke Tolman finished with nine points.
Janiel Olson was tied for the game high eight rebounds and also led the team with three steals.
Reserves
Annie DePuydt and
Quinn Peoples came off the bench to give quality minutes, combining for 19 points and 15 rebounds. DePuydt's eight rebounds match her career high.
The Yellowjackets recorded a season high 52 rebounds, with 32 coming on the defensive side.
Fairbanks was led by Kelly Logue who recorded game highs in points, 13, and steals, four. Taylor Altenburg and Ruth O'Neal grabbed eight rebounds each tying the game high.
MSUB finished 39.7 percent from the field while forcing the opposition to go 30.6 percent.
The Jackets opened the game with a 13-2 run and pushed their lead to 18 at the 7:17 mark (31-13). MSUB was poised to enter the half up 21, until Marissa Atoruk hit a three with 13 seconds remaining in the half to bring the Yellowjackets lead back down to 18 (40-22) entering halftime.
MSU Billings showed no sign of a let up and pushed their lead to 20 at the 15:38 mark (48-28). The Nanooks brought the lead down to 16 (48-32) at 14:18, before DePuydt sank two consecutive jumpers to bring the Yellowjackets lead back to 20 (52-32) and 13:17 remaining.
Fairbanks played tough and continued to fight for the entire contest but the 20 point lead would prove to be too much to overcome, and MSUB would go on to claim the 20 point victory.
“We shot the ball well early and carried that through the second half,” Woodin said. “Our matchup against Anchorage will be a highly competitive game and our team is looking forward to Saturday's contest.”
The Yellowjackets will now travel to Anchorage for their rematch with the University of Alaska Anchorage on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7:00 p.m. (Alaskan Time). MSUB defeated the Seawolves in their first match-up 78-64.
