Women’s Basketball Suffer Heartbreaking to Loss to Seattle Pacific

Box Score

Billings, Mont. – Despite one of their best shooting performances of the year, the Montana State Billings women's basketball team was defeated 76-71 by a determined Seattle Pacific team. The Yellowjackets and Falcons are now in a three way tie with Alaska Anchorage for fourth in GNAC standings.

With 10 lead changes and six ties, MSUB and Seattle Pacific went head up until the final moments of the contest; where the Falcons made key baskets to close out the game. The Yellowjackets and Seattle Pacific now sit at 15-9 overall, and 9-7 in the GNAC.

The Falcons did most of their damage inside, scoring 36 of their 76 points in the paint. They also shot the ball extremely well, finishing over 50 percent from both the field (27-52) and three-point territory (6-12). MSUB shot 41.3 percent from the field (26-63) and 31.0 percent from behind the arch (9-29). The Jackets did own a slight advantage in free-throw shooting going 90.9 percent (10-11) from the charity stripe compared to the opposition's 84.2 percent (16-19).

“We played very hard today and I am pleased with our effort,” stated head coach Kevin Woodin. “They made more plays than us down the stretch. All in all it was a hard fought game.”

MSU Billings had three players score in double-figures; Bobbi Knudsen led the way with 22 points and six assists. Kayleen Goggins came two points shy of her career high, tallying 18 points and four rebounds. Brooke Tolman poured in 11 points on 4-7 shooting (3-6 from three-point territory).

Annie DePuydt came off the bench to lead the team with seven rebounds, four offensive.

“Tolman's three-point shooting gave us a spark, and DePuydt rebounded well for us tonight,” Woodin said.

Aubree Callen, Katie Benson and Suzanna Ohlsen played great for Seattle Pacific, combining for 57 of the team's points. Callen had a game high 25 points with six rebounds and four assists. Benson remained in rhythm from last week where she won Red Lion GNAC Player of the Week honors, finishing with 20 points and a game high nine rebounds. Ohlsen contributed a solid 12 points and five rebounds. As a team the Falcons finished with 41 rebounds compared to the Yellowjackets 23.

Seattle Pacific and MSUB went back and forth for the majority of the first half. At 7:03 with the score tied at 19 all, Callen and Benson hit jumpers to put the Falcons up four (23-19) with 5:06 remaining in the half. Goggins helped the Yellowjackets cut the lead down to one (23-22) at 3:14 with a basket and foul shot.

The Falcons pushed their lead back to six points (28-22) at 2:25, before eventually closing out the half with a four point lead (29-25).

Goggins led all scorers with 12 points.

Both teams remained in stride in the second half and increased their offensive production. MSUB regained the lead and held a one point advantage (47-46) at 13:05. The Yellowjackets and Seattle Pacific proceeded to trade baskets, with the Falcons taking the lead and owning a narrow one point advantage (60-59) at the 5:55 mark.

The one point margin would be as close as MSUB would come to evening the score or taking the lead, as the Falcons answered each of the Yellowjackets' scores in the closing minutes; eventually capturing the five point victory.

“As a group we needed to rebound better tonight; in the second half they got more second chance opportunities than us,” stated Woodin. “We will need to clean that up moving forward.”

For their final week in the regular season, MSUB will travel to Nampa, Idaho to face Northwest Nazarene on Thursday, Feb. 28 and then head to Ellensburg, Wash. to face off with Central Washington on Saturday, March 2.

“I've seen improvement in my team that I have not seen in a while; I saw players willing to take the shot,” Woodin said. “I believe we will keep working hard, remain positive and respond appropriately next week.”
