Billings, Mont. – Montana State Billings women's basketball team lost their second consecutive home contest as the No. 8 Simon Fraser Clan defeated the Yellowjackets 61-55. MSUB falls to 15-8 overall, and 9-6 in the GNAC.
Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe was as advertised as she recorded her 14
th double-double of the season, finishing with 21 points and 21 rebounds. Erin Chambers also had 21 points for Simon Fraser going 7-16 from the field and 3-8 from three-point territory.
The Clan shot 44.2 percent from the field, compared to the Jackets 30.4 percent; as they owned the lead for the majority of the contest. MSU Billings made a great second half push late in the contest but fell short on their efforts.
“It was a tough loss and I thought we would play better; our shooting struggles continued throughout the course of the game,” stated head coach
Kevin Woodin. “Raincock-Ekunwe was extremely good tonight, but I feel Olson did a great job defending her once we switched match-ups. Simon Fraser is a good team, they pass the ball well and hit big shots tonight.”
Co-captains
Bobbi Knudsen and
Brooke Tolman turned in strong performances combing for 32 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
Janiel Olson battled with Raincock-Ekunwe all night and finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
“Tolman had a solid performance in her final home game,” Woodin said. “She has been a pleasure to coach, and is a very tough competitor. I am confident she will help lead us the rest of our season in a positive manner.”
Despite shooting poorly, the Yellowjackets did correct their free-throw issues, finishing 80 percent from the charity stripe compared to the Clan's 69.2 percent.
Both teams started slow and only combined for 48 points in the first half. With the score notched at 17 all and 5:23 remaining, Simon Fraser closed the half with a 10-4 run to own a six point advantage (27-21) at halftime.
The Clan started the second half with a 17-5 run and extended their lead to 18 (44-26) at 12:55. MSUB would not go quietly and countered with a 12-3 run to cut the opposition's lead to nine (38-47) with 8:41 remaining in regulation.
Simon Fraser showed no signs of panic and increased their lead back to double digits, leading by 16 (59-43) at the 4:38 mark. The Yellowjackets made one final push scoring 12 points compared to the Clan's two in the final four minutes of play, but would fall seven points short of their goal as Simon Fraser went ahead to claim their 11
th conference victory.
“We will have to regroup and find more ways to score consistently,” stated Woodin. “That will be a key focus entering these final two weeks of the season.”
“It's good to have a single game next week; will take a couple days off then get back to practice Tuesday to prepare for our next game,” Woodin said. “We are looking forward for to the challenge of playing a very good Seattle Pacific team.”
The Yellowjackets only have one contest next weekend as they travel to Seattle Pacific Saturday, Feb. 23. MSUB and the Falcons tip off at 2:00 p.m. (Pacific Time).
