Woodin Post-Game Interview

Billings, Mont. – Montana State Billings women's basketball team tried to extend their 11 home game win streak against No. 9 Western Washington Saturday evening at the Pink Zone Night event sponsored by the EVA Project and Jackets and Co. The Yellowjackets started hot, but unfortunately cooled off and were defeated 71-54.

The final score doesn't do the competitive nature of the game justice. MSUB and the Vikings went toe to toe for the majority of the match; with the game having seven lead changes and five ties. It wasn't until midway through the second half where Western Washington pulled away from the Jackets. In the end the Vikings continued to make their shots while MSU Billings missed their opportunities.

Western Washington did most of their damage inside as they scored 40 points in the paint compared to the Jackets 18. The Vikings also outshot MSUB going 47.5 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from three-point territory, compared to the Yellowjackets 35.8 field goal percent and 23.5 three-point percentage.

“Give Western Washington credit; they played very hard and I thought they made it hard for us to execute offensively,” stated head coach Kevin Woodin.

MSUB was uncharacteristically careless with the ball, registering 17 turnovers compared to the opponents 16.

The Vikings improve to 18-3 overall, 12-1 in the GNAC; while the Yellowjackets fall to 15-7 overall, 9-5 in the GNAC. The loss marks the first time of the 2012-13 season that MSUB has loss in Alterowitz Gymnasium.

Junior guard Bobbi Knudsen led all scorers with 20 points on 8-21 shooting. Janiel Olson grabbed a game high 12 rebounds, seven defensive. Kayleen Goggins also had a solid night with 12 points and four rebounds.

Sophomore forward Monica Grimsrud had a career high four blocks.

Western Washington's depth and balanced attack was key in their victory; as 11 players saw action with four scoring eight or more points. Britt Harris led the Vikings with 15 points on 7-9 shooting.

The first half didn't see much offense as both teams didn't reach double digits until the 9:21 mark. MSU Billings and Western Washington continued to trade baskets with the Vikings holding the slight three point advantage (30-27) entering intermission.

“At halftime I felt fortunate to only be down three; we turned it over too many times,” Woodin said. “Luckily, our defense was very solid and I thought we did a good job of grinding every possession. We missed several key free throws tonight. Many times they were one and one's and I felt their importance was magnified. Earlier this season, we were much better from the charity stripe. It has become a thorn in our side and we need to start making them consistently again.”

Western Washington's depth started to take its toll in the second half as MSUB left many shooters uncontested; allowing the Vikings to push their lead to 11 (50-39) with 11:49 remaining. A 5-0 run cut the opposition's lead down to six (50-44) at the 7:58 mark.

“For most of the second half, we hung around but couldn't ever put together a run to cut it under 6 points,” stated Woodin. “That is a tribute to Western Washington; and then over the last six minutes they put us away.”

This would be as close as the Jackets would get to Western's lead as the Vikings closed out the game with a 21-10 run.

“It was tough to lose our first game at home this season but I think it is critical that we respond with a great effort on Saturday,” Woodin said. “Simon Fraser is a very talented team and I expect them to play very well. We need to regroup and play our best game of the season. I am confident we can do that.”

MSUB will need to rebound quickly as they welcome No. 8 Simon Fraser University into Alterowitz Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 16 for their 2012-13 Senior Night.
