ANCHORAGE – The Montana State Billings Women's Basketball team lost to the University of Alaska Anchorage Thursday Dec. 5, 59-90.
On the beginning of their farthest conference road-trip, Montana State Billings (5-3, 0-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) lost their first conference game of the season.
It was a close game in the first 10 minutes of the first half. The University of Alaska Anchorage (6-1, 1-0 GNAC) would lead by five in the opening minutes, but MSU Billings would come back to tie the game at 17 points all at the 11:48 minute mark. A lay-up by
Bobbi Knudsen and a lay-up by
Chelsea Banis would have MSUB then up by four, 21-17. The score would remain close, until a free-throw by Alaska Anchorage's Alli Madison would send UAA on a five-minute 25-12 point-run to end the first half UAA 47, MSUB 32.
In the first half MSU Billings shot 38.7 percent from the field. As a team they were 2-9 from three-point territory. MSUB was also 6-8 from the free-throw line. Banis was the leading scorer for the Yellowjackets in the first half, she was 3-4 from the field, and 4-6 from the three-throw line. Knudsen was 3-6, including one of the two three-point baskets,
Quinn Peoples shooting 1-3 had the other.
Alaska Anchorage's starting guard Kiki Robertson was held to no points in the first half. She was 0-1 from the field with three fouls. Jessica Madison stepped up and went 4-7 for 12 points. Alli Madison would also be in the double-digits in the first half with 10 points.
In the first half, MSUB would out-rebound UAA 18-14.
In the second half MSU Billings shot 26 percent, including 0-9 in three-point shots. They were also out- rebounded 11-24. No Yellowjacket made more than two baskets from the field. Knudsen would be the high-scorer, but 8 of her 10 second half-points would come from free-throws.
Overall, Alaska Anchorage had 24 points to MSUB's 13 off of turn-overs. They had more second-chance points, 16-9, and they would get a huge boost from their bench. UAA would get 37 points from their non-starters.
"I give a lot of credit to Anchorage," Head Coach
Kevin Woodin said. "They really played well tonight. I thought we were flat and the game ended up snow-balling on us. We also had some opportunities early in the second half to chip away at their lead, but unfortunately the team missed on some easy baskets."
Knudsen was the high-scorer for the Yellowjackets. She had 17 points. Banis had 12 points and six rebounds.
Annie DePuydt had eight points.
Janiel Olson had six points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Alaska Anchorage had four players in double-digits. Keke Wright and Emily Craft both had 16. Jessica Madison had 15, and Alli Madison had 13 points. Wright led the team in rebounding with eight. Christina Davis would record 11 assists on the night.
Montana State Billings will travel to the University of Alaska Fairbanks next. They will play UAF on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7 PM Alaska Standard Time. Live video and live stats will be available at MSUBSports.com.
"It is important that we respond with a much improved effort on Saturday at UAF," Coach Woodin stated. "I know our team is disappointed, but we are looking forward to our next conference game in Fairbanks."
