Women’s Basketball Reaches 100 on Throwback Night

Box Score

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings Women's Basketball team won their contest against the University of Great Falls on Friday Nov. 22, 102-78.

The crowd at Alterowitz Gymnasium packed the house in black and gold for the first ever "throwback night" at MSU Billings.  Both the men's and women's basketball teams competed in black and gold uniforms based on designs from the Eastern Montana College era.  The mens team wore jerseys circa 1970, while the women wore designs from the 1980's.

Montana State Billings (3-2) had five players score in double-digits.  The Yellowjackets shot 59 percent in the game including 70 percent in the second half.  In the second half, MSUB was 22-31 from the field, including 6-9 from the three-point arc, and 11-12 from the free-throw line.

MSUB led by as much as 18 in the first half, but the University of Great Falls (5-2) would counter.  With five minutes left, the Argos would put together a 12-1 run cutting the lead down to six.  A three-pointer by UGF's Taylor Statton, two free-throws from Darah Huertas-Vining, and a lay-up from Nneka Nnadi would tie the game at 39 with less than a minute to go in the first half.  Chelsea Banis would get a rebound and a put-back off a missed shot by the Yellowjackets to send the teams into the locker room with MSUB seeing their lead cut to 2, 41-39.

"We played well for most of the first half, but unfortunately they erased our double-digit lead with a great run of their own late in the half," Head Coach Kevin Woodin said.  "I felt they had the momentum going into the second half."

MSU Billings would return to the court for the second half knocking down eight straight unanswered points before a lay-up by UGF's Mary Wilmore would put the Argos on the board again.  The Yellowjackets outscored Great Falls 61-39 in the second half.  They had 22 points off of turn-overs and 26 points in the paint.

"I liked our intensity and focus the entire second half," Coach Woodin said.   "Everyone on the team contributed and we were aggressive on both ends of the court.  We also had good offensive balance tonight.  Players were making the extra pass and we got the ball inside to our posts who finished well."

For the Argos, Statton had 17 points, six rebounds, and two assists.  Erin Legel had a team-high 21 points, five rebounds, and four assists.  Eight players had points for the Argos; 17 points from the bench, and 18 points in the paint.

Quinn Peoples tied her career in points and three-point baskets for the Yellowjackets.  She led all scorers with 23 points, including five three-pointers.  Kayleen Goggins was 8-13 from the field and finished with 21 points and seven rebounds.  Chelsea Banis was 7-11 and 17 points.  Annie DePuydt shot 71 percent from the field; she finished with 13 points and four assists.  Alisha Breen was 4-8 for 11 points and tied the team-high seven rebounds with Goggins. Bobbi Knudsen had nine points, a team-high eight assists and five rebounds.

"Quinn Peoples was tremendous tonight and gave us a great game," Coach Woodin stated.  Peoples now has 106 career three-pointers.  This puts her at eighth all-time at MSUB.  She also scored 23 of the 31 points supplied by the Yellowjacket bench.

This was an exhibition game for the Argos, but a counted game for MSU Billings.

It will be another fast turn-around for the Yellowjackets.  They will play a rematch at home with cross-town rival Rocky Mountain College this Monday Nov. 22 at 7 PM.  MSUB won their first contest, an exhibition game, at Rocky 90-58 back on October 4.

"We are looking forward to playing Rocky on Monday night," Coach Woodin said.  "It is a great game for our community and we look forward to all the fans who come out and support us."
