BILLINGS, Mont. –The Montana State University Billings men's basketball team defeated Montana State University-Northern, Friday night at Alterowitz Gym, 76-41.
The game was the first ever "EMC Throwback Night" at MSUB in which the Jackets wore black and gold jerseys from the 1970's to honor the Easter Montana College era in Billings.
MSUB (3-3) played one of their best games yet in this young season in the second match up of the two teams (Nov. 1). With smothering defense and the best shooting performance of the season, shooting 54.9 percent, the Jackets were too much for the Lights(6-2) to handle who were play this game as an exhibition.
The Jackets held the Lights to 30.8 percent shooting from the field and only allowed the Lights to score 12 baskets the entire night. MSUB forced nine turnovers, while only giving up five, and scored nine points off of turnovers.
MSUB shot 45.5 percent from three point range with
Connor Donaldson going 5-6 from behind the arc, he had 19 points on the night to go with five rebounds.
Jonathan Mesghna scored 11 points, with nine coming from three point range going 3-5 from behind the arc, and dished out five assists.
Austin Hudson has his best game of the season manning the low post scoring a game high 25 points and ripping down a game high 12 rebounds.
Kalob Hatcher had nine points and five rebounds running the point for the Jackets.
Luke Adams scored his first points of the season, he had four points in three minutes of play.
The Lights shot 17.6 percent from three point range. They were led by Corbin Pearson who went 1-3 from behind the arc and had a team high 13 points. Alfie Miller, who had 21 points in the first meeting between the two teams, was held to 11 points.
The Jackets dominated down low scoring 32 points in the paint compared to the Lights mustering 12 points in the paint. MSUB had 17 second chance points while the Lights only had two.
"I thought our guys executed really well and played well," Head Coach
Jamie Stevens said. "We did a nice job of getting the ball inside and out rebounded an opponent by 18. That's what we wanted to do at the start of the game and that's what we need to emphasize, rebounding and physical play."
The Jackets jumped on the lights early, and eights minutes into the game found themselves ahead 15-5. They never looked back, scoring 38 first half points and only allowing MSU-N to score 17 on the back of Donaldson shooting 3-3 from behind the arc and Hudson scoring 12 of his 25 points in the first half. The Lights could not find their rhythm and never threated MSUB's led as the Jackets kept up the blistering defense and strong shooting performance to go on and win 76-41.
"Our next game is a GNAC game," Stevens said. "Hopefully tonight was a nice start because the GNAC is on its way."
The Jackets next play Central Washington in their Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener at home in Alterowitz December 5th at 7:00 P.M.
