Women's Basketball Flies Over Eagles

Box Score

BILLINGS, Mont. - The Montana State Billings Women's basketball team won their home-opener in Alterowitz Gymnasium on Saturday November 16 beating Chadron State College 59-55.

MSU Billings (2-2) led by as much as 14 points, but it was a very determined Chadron State (0-3) team that came to play on the campus of Montana State Billings.

"In the first half, I liked our defense – especially early," Head Coach Kevin Woodin said.  "We were doing a good job on the glass and playing some good possessions of defense without fouling.  Chadron is very patient and many times we had to play 20-30 seconds of defense which is hard to do."

The first ten minutes of the game had both teams looking for their shots to fall and being patient on offense and defense, as with six minutes in the game the scoreboard had less than 20 points on it.

The game was tight until 10:24 minutes in when the Yellowjackets went on a nine-point run in 4 minutes to open the lead up to 10.  Two lay-ups by Kayli Rageth and a three-pointer by Kattie Ranta would pull Chadron to within three with four minutes left in the half.  MSUB would fight back, Bobbi Knudsen would make two jump shots from the floor, and Janiel Olson a three-pointer in the last minute to send the game to half-time with MSU Billings up by 12, 35-23.

"I thought we played our best stretch at the end of the first half which enabled us to get a double-digit lead," Coach Woodin stated.  "I thought we started pounding the offensive glass better."

In the second half, MSU Billings would again play patient as they steadily continued to take shots and work hard on rebounds.  Chadron would dig deep though.  In the middle of the second half, the Eagles would put together a 15-7 point run, getting them to within six.  Chadron State's Dallas Shaw would come into the game sinking two three-point shots and making two key rebounds, but Montana State Billings would answer back.  Chelsea Banis made a lay-up and Knudsen two key free-throws in the final 30 seconds and the Yellowjackets would come out with their first win at home this season.

Knudsen would go 8-22 from the floor with 4 rebounds and four assists; she had a team-high 23 points for the Yellowjackets.  Banis was 5-11 with 10 points and seven rebounds and Olson had five points and a team-high nine rebounds in the first game on the campus of MSUB this season for the Yellowjackets.

"It was an important regional Division II win for us tonight.  It was a hard fought victory and I was impressed with how Chadron State battled us," Coach Woodin said.  "They would not go away once we got them down in double figures and that is a tribute to them."

Ranta would finish with a double-double for the Eagles; she had a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds.  Regath would add 16 points and Shaw 12.  Chadron State would finish with a 42.6 percent shooting average to MSUB's 37.7 percent, but would only be 3-3 from the free-throw line, to the Yellowjackets 10-17.
MSUB shot 16.7 percent from three-point territory, but only committed six turn-overs for the game and out-rebounded the Eagles 32-28.

Next up for MSU Billings is a trip to Bozeman, Mont. to play NCAA Div. I Montana State next Wednesday November 20.

"I know our team is looking forward to playing the Bobcats on Wednesday night before returning home for three games before the Thanksgiving break," Coach Woodin stated.  "It will be key for us to shoot better as a team and to build on tonight's consistent inside game; that will have us being more effective all-around.  We need to continue to improve."

Last year, the Yellowjackets got the win in Bozeman 57-54 on December 29.  Wednesday's November 20 game between MSUB and MSU will start at 7 PM.  Live video, live radio, and live stats are available at msubobcats.com
