Billings, Mont. – Following last weekend's success, Montana State Billings entered Thursday's contest one slot ahead of Simon Fraser in GNAC standings. The Clan had a hot shooting night and defeated the Yellowjackets 89-58.
Simon Fraser entered the match up ranked No. 10 nationally in the Jan. 15
USA Today Sports Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll; while MSUB received eight votes for ranking consideration.
Following Thursday's match up the Clan improves to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in the GNAC; and the Jackets fall to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in the GNAC.
Simon Fraser had one of its best shooting performances of the season going 58.3 percent from the field (35-60) and 56 percent from three point territory (14-25). Despite shooting well from behind the arch, 46.2 percent (6-13), MSUB struggled overall from the field, going 38.7 percent (24-62).
The Yellowjackets were uncharacteristically less efficient with their possessions as they committed 17 turnovers, compared to the Clan's 15. Simon Fraser also out-rebounded MSUB 36-29.
Three of the Jackets' starters scored in double figures, led by junior guard
Bobbi Knudsen who finished with a game high 18 points. She also had eight assists, five rebounds and three steals on the night.
Kayleen Goggins finished with 13 points and
Janiel Olson registered 12 points and six rebounds.
Simon Fraser had a very balanced scoring night as all but one player registered stats in the scoring column, four of five starters scored in double figures and five players in total registered double figures in points. As a team the Clan had 27 assists, led by Kristina Collins who recorded a double-double, 16 points and 10 assists. Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe also recorded a double-double on the night with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Carla Wyman came off the bench to score 10 points and grab three rebounds for Simon Fraser.
The contest started off very competitive as there were four lead changes and five ties in the first half. MSUB led by four (28-24) with 8:03 remaining in the half; then Simon Fraser dealt a crucial blow that would prove to be the turning point in the match, going on a 16-8 run to close the half. The Clan held the 44-32 advantage entering the break.
Simon Fraser carried their momentum into the second half and built their 12 point lead to 21 (62-41) at the 12:34 mark. As the Clan held a firm grasp on the game, their consistent shooting combined with the Yellowjackets' shooting struggles would not allow MSUB to competitively get back into the game. Simon Fraser would eventually go on to claim their 12 win of the season.
“I give Simon Fraser a lot of credit, they played a great game,” stated head coach
Kevin Woodin. “They are a very talented and well coached team. Their three-point shooting was deadly all night and they were tough to guard. It was their night. We will need to respond with a better effort and execute more efficiently Saturday against Western Washington.”
MSUB will need to regroup quickly as they travel to Bellingham, Wash. on Saturday, Jan. 17 to play Western Washington who is ranked No. 8 nationally and No. 1 in GNAC standings. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. (Pacific Time).
