MSUB Drops Second Straight Game to Top 10 Team

SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 8 Seattle Pacific University men's basketball team grabbed its 11th win of the season with an 81-56 victory over Montana State University Billings Saturday.

The Falcons (11-2, 4-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) eased to the win behind 49 percent shooting from the field, and four double-digit scorers. Andy Poling finished with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. Patrick Simon and David Downs added 15 and 10 points, while Jobi Wall had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Wall and Downs both tossed six assists.

Seattle Pacific made 33 of its 67 shots from the field, including seven of its 22 three-point range. It also was 8-of-12 from the free-throw line. The Falcons limited MSUB to 35 percent shooting from the field in the first half, and 21-of-54 in the game. The Yellowjackets were also 7-for-24 from behind the perimeter and made seven of their 14 free-throw attempts.

In a game that SPU never trailed in, the Falcons held MSU Billings to 56 points, the lowest total scored by MSUB in a GNAC game under Jamie Stevens. The 25-point final margin is also the largest margin of defeat under Stevens. It was the 18th straight win for Seattle Pacific over the Yellowjackets in Seattle, dating back to a 74-73 MSU Billings' win on Jan. 16, 1987.

Seattle Pacific controlled the rebound advantage, outrebounding the Yellowjackets 45-28. The Falcons had nearly as many offensive rebounds as MSUB had defensive (17-19). SPU had a 15-8 second-chance point advantage, and outscored MSU Billings, 50-24 in the paint. The Falcons also turned 15 Montana State Billings' turnovers into a 26-16 points off of turnovers advantage.

The Falcons scored the first nine points of the game, and had a 13-3 lead four minutes into the contest. Four minutes later, SPU had a 22-9 advantage after Downs' lay-in. A Simon lay-in with one-second remaining in the opening half, gave Seattle Pacific a 19-point lead, matching the largest margin of the first stanza. The Falcons led 43-24 at halftime behind a 50 percent to 35 percent shooting from the field advantage.

A Shawn Reid three-pointer at the 12:40 mark of the second half, gave SPU a 60-35 lead, the largest deficit faced under Stevens. However, the lead stretched to 28 points twice late in the half, before the final margin of 25 points.

The Yellowjackets (8-8, 1-4 GNAC) fell to a top-10 ranked opponent for the second straight game. Jarrell Crayton had a game-high 18 points, making eight of his 14 attempts from the field. Devon Wallace scored 14 points, and Omar McDade had 10. Crayton and Robby Trabing both grabbed six rebounds. Kalob Hatcher threw a game-high seven assists.

Montana State Billings remains on the road next week with games at Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene Thursday and Saturday. Both games will have live video and stats on MSUBSports.com. The CWU tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Pacific Time Thursday, while Saturday's tipoff at NNU is slated for 7 p.m. Mountain Time.
