Wolves Spoil MSUB’s “Senior Day” With Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BILLINGS, Mont. – Saturday's “Senior Day” festivities were bittersweet for the Montana State Billings baseball team as the Yellowjackets celebrated the careers of their six seniors, but were unable to send Matt Comer, Kyle Gieselman, Brian Hutchings, Blake Nelson, Zachary Smith and Trevor Wilson out with a win as No. 8 nationally-ranked Western Oregon completed the series sweep at Dehler Park.

The Wolves (40-9, 29-3 GNAC) truly lived up to the billing of their ranking as they blanked the 'Jackets (22-24, 13-19 GNAC) 18-0 in the first game before finishing the sweep with an 11-3 victory in game two.

“Today was a bittersweet day for us," said head coach Rob Bishop. "The pre-game ceremony honoring our seniors was memorable. They are a great bunch of guys that made solid contributions on the field this year and helped our program establish some building blocks for the future. I am really proud of their accomplishments as players and as people.

"The games were tough, we just couldn't get any momentum going offensively in either game and Western Oregon was terrific. They definitely showed why they are #8 in the country and the top ranked team in our region.”

Game One: WOU 18, MSUB 0

The Yellowjackets were able to keep pace with the Wolves early in the first game as Western Oregon was only able to muster two runs through the first five innings, but it all began to fall apart in the six inning as the Wolves tallied five runs.

Western Oregon would add another 10 in the seventh inning and one final score in the ninth as the Wolves out-hit the 'Jackets 17-5.

In total, 12 different players scored for the Wolves with Griff Boyd scoring three himself including a home run. He went 2-5 with three RBI while Scott David went 4-5 with two runs scored and another two knocked in.

MSUB utilized five pitchers, but it was senior starter Smith who was saddled with the loss after striking out five batters in five and one-third innings of work.

Kirk Lind (7-2) went the first seven innings for WOU to claim the win, matching Smith with five batters retired.

Game Two: WOU 11, MSUB 3

Game-one appeared to be a bit of a wake-up call for MSUB as they were able to break through with a run scored in the first inning, but WOU kept up their momentum, chipping away at the Yellowjacket pitching corps, tallying 15 hits.

Western Oregon would add solo runs in the third and sixth innings, and broke out with five in the fourth. They added the final two runs in the top of the seventh inning.

MSUB's final pair of runs came in the fifth frame, but it proved to be too little, too late for hopes of mounting a come-back.

Freshman Brady Muller went the first four innings for MSUB to accept the loss and move to 5-3 for the year while Travis Bradshaw pitched just two innings to claim his ninth win of the season for WOU.
