MONMOUTH, Ore. – With a two-run, no-out home run in the sixth inning of game-one, senior outfielder Meg Harasymczuk equaled Theresa “Soup” Campbell's eight-year-old school record of 15 home runs in a single season. The Montana State Billings softball team (31-11, 24-6 GNAC) would go on to swap 5-4 decisions with the Wolves of Western Oregon University (18-23, 14-14 GNAC) Friday afternoon in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

Harasymczuk now has 29 career homers in just two seasons which has her second all-time for most home runs in school history.

“It was great to see Meg tie the single-season home run record today,” said head coach Lisa Allen. “She has worked extremely hard this year on her swing and it has shown in her power at the plate.”

The Yellowjackets trailed early in both games, going down 5-0 early in each, and had to work hard late to fight back into contention. After succeeding to complete the come-from-behind-win in the day's first game, MSUB fell just short in the second game despite a late charge fueled by a Nicole Colpron solo shot to lead off the seventh inning.

“The team did a good job of fighting back today after being down in both games,” head coach Lisa Allen said. “Unfortunately, in the second game, we just did not get quite enough for the win. Overall, it was a pretty good day for our team both offensively and defensively.”

Game-One: MSUB 5, WOU 4

MSUB struck first in the first game with a single run in the opening stanza, but WOU would then score four-unanswered runs to take the lead. The Wolves started their attack with one run in the bottom of the first inning and then wrapped up their scoring with three runs in the fourth.

Faced with a three-run hill to climb, the Yellowjackets never panicked and slowly chipped away led by Harasymczuk's two-run shot in the top of the sixth that also scored junior Rose Harrington. Jenna VanEykeren would give MSUB the lead and eventual win off a double to deep right-center field that scored both Harasymczuk and Bobbie Lee.

Freshman and local product Jessyka MacDonald (6-2) pitched a complete game and struck out six batters to record the win in the circle for MSUB while the Wolves' Hannah Pomeroy (6-9) accepted the loss in six-and-two-thirds innings of work that saw her give up nine hits and five runs while matching MacDonald with six strikeouts.

Game-Two: WOU 5, MSUB 4

Western Oregon started off the second game by breaking through with three runs in the bottom of the third inning and never trailed in the doubleheader's nightcap en route to recording the 5-4 win. The Wolves had to endure an extremely strong Yellowjacket offense fueled by two home runs.

Down 5-0 and with two outs already registered in the top of the fifth inning, MSUB's freshman catcher, Brittney Sanders, sparked the late-game rally for the 'Jackets with a home run over the center field fence. The solo shot was her second home run of the season.

In the sixth inning, Harasymczuk scored her third run of the day off a wild pitch before VanEykeren sent a sacrifice fly to center field that drove Emily Osborn home.

The Yellowjackets appeared poised to complete another amazing comeback after Nicole Colpron led off the seventh inning with a solo home run, but MSUB's efforts would fall just short as the Wolves' infield stepped up after that to retire the next three batters in order.

MSUB's Amanda Todd (7-4) gave up just five hits and retired seven batters as she accepted the loss. Myranda Sawyer (6-5) claimed the win in game-two off six innings of work that saw her give up six hits and two earned runs while striking out four.

The Yellowjackets will have a quick turnaround thanks to the postponed doubleheader in Monmouth as they have to be in Ellensburg, Wash. for a GNAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 21. The twinbill is slated to start at 1 p.m.
