NAMPA, Idaho –
Meg Harasymczuk finally ended her drought Saturday afternoon, ripping a home run in game-two of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader against Northwest Nazarene University to pull within one homer of the program's single-season record. The Montana State University Billings softball team (30-10, 23-5 GNAC), which has 49 home runs on the season, swept the twinbill over the Crusaders (6-29, 5-21 GNAC) with a 9-4 victory in game-one before posting a 9-0, six-inning win in the second game.
It is only the third time in school history that the Yellowjackets have reached the 30-win mark. In 2005, Jeff Aumend's squad went 36-14 to win the Pac West and make the program's first appearance in the NCAA tournament. Tony Stone's 2009 team went 39-17, winning the GNAC and making MSUB's second appearance in the NCAA tournament.
“The girls played two excellent games today,” head coach
Lisa Allen stated. “The team was present for all 13 innings today and had their heads in the games. Kasie (Conder) and (Amanda) Todd did a great job for us in the circle, today and our defense played errorless through both games. Our offense did an amazing job of making adjustments at the plate early on and kept getting timely hits.”
Becca Frank had the most prolific outing at the plate for the day as the junior shortstop went 6-for-7 between the two games with four runs batted in and another two scored.
Game-One: MSUB 9, NNU 4
The Crusaders started the game off hot in the first inning, scoring two runs off three hits to go up early before MSUB responded with a pair of their own runs in the next inning.
After the Crusaders scored their final two runs in the third inning, MSUB went on to control the end of the game, scoring three runs in the fourth frame, two more in the fifth and a final two runs in the seventh inning.
Brittney Sanders registered her first home run of the season in the final frame, driving in
Taylor Hoke in the process.
Frank and Sanders led the way for the Yellowjackets in game-one with both going 3-4. Frank scored one run and batted another two in while Sanders had three RBIs and three runs scored.
Kasie Conder pitched her third complete game of the season to improve to 6-1 for the year. The junior retired 11 batters, hit two and walked another in her seven innings of work while Krista Olson failed to register a single strikeout to fall to 2-6 for the year.
Game-Two: MSUB 9, NNU 0 (6 Innings)
After warming up in game-one, the Yellowjackets went on a tear in the second game of the doubleheader kick-started by a four-run third inning. They would go on to score another run in the fourth and then a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth frames.
Rose Harrington commenced the scoring drive for the 'Jackets with a three-run homer that scored
Bobbie Lee and
Nicole Wilkerson. Harrington (2-4) led the way in the game with three runs batted in and also two runs scored.
Harasymczuk (2-3) then stepped up to the plate and sent the ball on its second consecutive long ride over the fence to pull within one home run of MSUB's single-season school record of 15 home runs.
Frank once again led the way with a perfect 3-3 performance at the plate that saw her knock in two runs, score another and swipe a base.
Amanda Todd (7-3) fanned nine batters while giving up just three hits and one walk in game-two to earn the win in the circle while Cara Duckworth (3-15) suffered the loss for NNU.
