BILLINGS, Mont.
– It took a little bit to get going, but once the bats heated up, the Montana State University Billings baseball team never looked back. The Yellowjackets (14-16, 5-11 GNAC) fell behind early in the first game of Saturday's Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader with Saint Martin's University (10-24, 6-10 GNAC) and did not fully recover in time as they fell 8-5 before swarming back to claim the second game 12-5

Game One: SMU 8, MSUB 5

Behind a steady offensive attack, the Saints steadily marched to victory in game-one of the twinbill, out-hitting the Yellowjackets 13-9 that saw SMU ease out to a 5-0 lead by the time the third inning wrapped up.

Following the four-run third frame, MSUB woke up on both sides of the ball as they registered two runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

In the fifth inning, freshman Ty Gilmore knocked a double to the far corner of right field to score Devon Hedin before Brody Miller singled through the right side to score Justin Haracharik.

Trevor Wilson and Matt Comer each singled in the sixth and seventh innings driving in runs to pull within two runs, but the late-game surge would fall just short as SMU tallied another three runs in the top of the eighth inning that proved too much for MSUB to overcome.

Comer, who finished the day 4-9 with four runs batted in and one run scored, went 3-5 at the plate in game-one with one RBI.

Brady Muller (3-2) pitched the first seven innings for MSUB, earning the loss. The freshman left-handed pitcher from Billings retired five batters and walked two others during his time in the game.

Onate O'Bryan (2-6) recorded four strikeouts and gave up just one earned run in five innings of work to secure the win before Zach Carter came in for just over an inning to earn his first save of the season.

Game Two: MSUB 12, SMU 5

After giving up a single run in the top of the first inning of game-two, MSUB went on a tear to score at least one run over the first five innings and cruise to the victory. The 'Jackets scored three runs in the opening stanza, another in the second, two more in the third and fourth innings and a final four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Blake Loran led off the scoring drive with a double to left field that cleared the bases by pushing Blake Nelson, Colby Robison and Miller all across the dish to push MSUB ahead 3-1.

Comer would put the exclamation point on the scoring drive and win with a three-run home run over the left field wall in the fifth inning. It was his only hit of the contest and his fourth homer of the season.

Saint Martin's found an extra three runs in the top of the final inning, but it was no use as closer Lucas Blehm and the defense stepped up to shut down the Saints' bats and earn the split for the day.

Brian Hutchings (3-3) pitched six innings and fanned six batters while giving up just two runs and two walks to earn the win on the mound for MSUB while Sean Goforth (1-3) went just 3.2 innings and gave up eight runs, three earned, to accept the loss.

The Yellowjackets are scheduled to be back in action at Dehler Park tomorrow afternoon with their final two games against the Saints. First pitch is slated to be thrown out at 1 p.m., but due to the threat of inclement weather in the Billings area, that time could be changed. Updates will be sent out as they are known.
