Dixie State Sweeps Yellowjacket Baseball in Sunday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAINT GEORGE, Utah
– Not much went in favor of the Montana State University Billings baseball team Sunday afternoon as the squad was swept in their doubleheader with the Red Storm of Dixie State College at Bruce Hurst Field. The Storm dominated the first game 14-3 and then followed that performance up by claiming a 4-2 victory in the second game off a last-inning walk-off home run.

The pair of losses drops the Yellowjackets to 2-4 on the season while Dixie State improves to 10-4.

In the day's first game, Dixie State raced out to an early 8-0 lead in the first inning off five hits and an MSUB error which MSUB would never recover from.

The Yellowjackets were able to get one run back in each of the second, fifth and seventh innings, but the damage was done, and the Red Storm added five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and a final run in the sixth.

In total, Dixie State out-hit MSUB 13-7.

Derek Allen suffered the loss on the mound for MSUB to fall to 1-1 after pitching just 2.1 innings. Mike Dedrick claimed the win for the Red Storm, improving to a similar 1-1 record.

In the second game, Montana State Billings was able to pull out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Ty Gilmore doubled down the left field foul line to move Justin Harcharik and Blake Nelson across the plate.

However, the lead would not last long as the Red Storm answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and then claimed the win with two in the bottom of the seventh inning when Cedric Johnson hit a walk-off home run over the right center field wall that also scored Ammon Zitting.

Samuel Paterson suffered his second loss of the season on the mound going 6.2 innings. The junior left-handed pitcher was able to strike out seven batters while Austin Christiansen struck out just two to secure the win for Dixie State.

Gilmore went 3-7 for the day with three RBIs and a run scored to lead the Yellowjackets at the plate.

Garrett Nash and Colton Yack led the Storm in the first game by going 4-6 and 3-4. They each scored three runs while Nash had three RBIs to Yacks one.

The two programs will face-off again tomorrow in another doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
