Softball Earns Split Results in First Day at Tournament of Champions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TURLOCK, Calif.
– The Montana State University Billings softball saw their 11-game winning streak come to an end Friday morning as the Yellowjackets fell to Chaminade University 2-0, but they turned it around for their afternoon game against California State University San Bernardino to exact revenge with a 3-1 victory in the Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.

With the split decision on Friday, MSUB improves to 21-6 for the season.

“Today, the team struggled getting the bats going,” said head coach Lisa Allen. “Both (Jessica) Campbell and (Jessyka) MacDonald did what they needed to do in the circle to give our team the chance to win in the first game against Chaminade; unfortunately, our offense did not make the adjustments necessary to move runners over and score runs.

“In the second game, (Mary Grace Bywater) had a great game pitching some good results and using our defense well. The offense came out early and scored a couple of runs to give us the win.”

In the day's first game, the Silverswords of Chaminade (9-16) handed MSUB its first shutout loss of the season by pushing across the pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning despite the best efforts of relief-pitcher Jessyka MacDonald. MacDonald ended the game with three innings of work and four strikeouts while Jessica Campbell suffered her first loss of the season.

Brett Aspel claimed the win in the circle for Chaminade with five strikeouts in her seven innings.

Senior Jenna VanEykeren led the way for MSUB at the dish with a 2-for-2 performance as the Yellowjackets' second baseman.

In the Yellowjackets' second game, freshman Emily Osborn moved reigning Louisville Slugger Division II National Player-of-the-Week Meg Harasymczuk and Rose Harrington across the plate to give MSUB the early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Osborn ended the game having gone 2-for-3 at the plate with the pair of runs batted in.

The Coyotes (14-21) got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning, but never threatened from there as Bobbie Lee hit her sixth home run of the season in the top of the very next inning to seal the 3-1 win for MSUB.

Mary Grace Bywater fanned three batters to improve to 4-1 for the season in seven innings of work while Carly Land fell to 5-10 with the loss.

MSUB will open up play on Saturday by taking on the 11th-ranked Wildcats of Cal State Chico at 11 a.m. The 'Jackets will then turn their focus to tournament host Cal State Stanislaus at 3:30 p.m. and will wrap up their Saturday with a 5:45 p.m. game against Dominican University.
