BILLINGS, Mont. – With the rest of their classmates preparing to take off to enjoy spring break, the Montana State University Billings baseball team is looking to jump back into their 2012 campaign with a pair of doubleheaders this weekend against Dixie State College after enjoying two weeks of preparation.
They Yellowjackets (2-2) look to take on a Dixie State team (8-4) that recently broke a three-game losing skid with a single win after opening the season on a five-game winning streak. The pair of doubleheaders on Sunday, March 4 and Monday, March 5 will both start at 2 p.m.
MSUB was led in their opening series against Colorado State University – Pueblo by
Mack Unruh who recorded a .429 batting average over three games with three hits in seven at-bats.
Behind Unruh,
Ty Gilmore and
Matt Comer each had solid performances down in Pueblo, Colo. as Gilmore hit .357 in 14 plate appearances while Comer went .333 and recorded a home run. Comer knocked in seven runs and leads the team with a .583 slugging percentage while Gilmore recorded five RBIs.
On the mound,
Derek Allen and
Brady Muller each recorded a win over the two days and enter the spring break trip with 3.00 earned run averages. Along with
Samuel Paterson, the trio all pitched six innings and gave up five hits each. All three also held their opponents to below a .250 batting average and gave up just six earned runs among them.
The Red Storm of Dixie State is led by Joe Andrade with a .467 batting average. In 45 at-bats, he has recorded 21 hits, three home runs and 20 RBIs and currently boasts an .844 slugging percentage with a .510 on-base percentage.
Behind Andrade, Mitch Mannig is the only other player with a batting average over .400 with a .412. He is second on the team with two home runs and nine RBIs.
Dixie State's pitching corps is led by Austin Christiansen who in 10.2 innings of work has a 0.00 ERA. He has faced 32 batters and struck out seven to sit 1-0 on the season.
Sam Friend is currently 2-0 on the season on the mound with a 3.38 ERA spanning 13.1 innings. He has recorded a team-second-best 12 strikeouts and has faced 53 batters.
Following the Dixit State series, MSUB will then open their Great Northwest Athletic Conference slate in Lacey, Wash. against the Saints of Saint Martin's.
