ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Montana State University Billings men's basketball team did not have much of an answer Saturday night for the 21
st-ranked University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves as the Yellowjackets fell on the road 85-70 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.
The loss breaks a streak of four-straight wins for the Yellowjackets and drops them to 13-8 overall that includes an 8-5 mark in league action. With the win, Anchorage improves to 17-4 overall and 11-2 in the league.
“Anchorage is a great program and team,” said head coach
Jamie Stevens. “They have everything you would want in a team; a great post player, great teammates around him that really play too their strengths and they are really well coached. Tonight their posts were better, their guards were better and they completely out-coached us on both ends of the floor. Hopefully, our team can learn from this and it will make us better over the next month of our season.”
The Yellowjackets were able to muster a 37.7% (23-61) shooting performance from the field that included doubling up the Seawolves' three-point shot total (10-5). MSUB was also able to hit on 82.4% (14-17) from the charity stripe as every player who saw action on the court for Stevens scored at least two points.
Senior guard
Antoine Proctor led the scoring drive with 18 points for the Yellowjackets that included going a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. Just behind Proctor,
Jaxon Myaer scored 12 points as the Salt Lake City, Utah native just missed out on a double-double performance with nine assists.
Robert Mayes and
David Arnold scored nine and eight points respectively with Mayes corralling in a team-high eight rebounds.
The Seawolves hit on 52.5% (31-59) of their looks from the field following a 59.4% first half shooting performance. The Seawolves hit 18 of their 22 (81.8%) of their free throw attempts and out-scored the Yellowjackets 42-24 in the paint.
Taylor Rohde paced all scorers with 30 points off an impressive 11-13 performance from the field and an 8-10 effort from the charity stripe while also batting away a team-high-tying two balls. Rohde finished the night with a double-double as he also brought down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Along with Rohde, Travis Thompson and Colton Lauwers each finished with double-digit point productions with 10 points each. The pair made three shots from the floor each and were both perfect (2-2) from the free throw line.
MSUB enjoyed an early lead after
Cameron Cusworth drilled the first three-pointer of the game just a minute and a half into the game, but the lead would be short-lived as Kyle Fossman's jumper just two minutes later would give Anchorage the lead for the first and final time.
By the time Steve White put up a layup with 8:52 remaining in the first half, Anchorage's lead was double digits, and would never dip below that for the rest of the game.
MSUB will return home for a pair of home games next week against Central Washington University and Northwest Nazarene University. The Wildcats prowl into town on Thursday, Feb. 9 for a 7 p.m. game with the Crusaders entering Billings two days later on Saturday for a similar 7 p.m. GNAC contest.
