HILO, Hawaii – The Montana State University Billings' men's basketball team grabbed a 54-50 win over Maryville University in the third game of the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Thanksgiving Tournament Tuesday.
In the first meeting between the schools, the Yellowjackets (3-1) rallied from a halftime deficit for the second straight night. After leading by as many as nine points five minutes into the game, MSUB fell behind 23-20 at halftime. Maryville, which lost its first game of the season, led by as many as 12 just into the second half.
Jarrell Crayton led MSU Billings with a season-high 25 points. The senior made nine of his 17 shots from the field, and all seven of his free-throw attempts. He added a game-high nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
David Arnold chipped in 14 points and had a team-high three assists.
“I guess we are figuring out how to win games in different ways,” MSUB head coach
Jamie Stevens said. “We have now had back-to-back ice-cold shooting nights but the guys have found a way to win. Our defense again was really good and we were able to force several turnovers and tough shots. Maryville plays a very deliberate style and they controlled the tempo all night. We couldn't speed them up to the pace we wanted, and the fact that we still won the game is really nice.”
Both teams shot dismal from behind-the-arc, combining for just four makes in 32 attempts. Montana State Billings was 2-for-21, while the Saints were 2-for-11. MSUB was outshot again Tuesday, making 37 percent of its shots from the field, while Maryville made 42 percent. The Saints were 18-for-23 from the free-throw, and MSU Billings was 12-for-16. Maryville also held a 32-28 rebound advantage.
Montana State Billings turned 23 Maryville turnovers into a 23-5 points off of turnovers advantage. The Yellowjackets committed 14 turnovers.
MSU Billings scored the game's first nine points, six of them from Crayton. The Saints responded with a 7-0 run capped by a pair of free throws from Asa Toney at the 13:47 mark of the first half. Four minutes later, the Yellowjackets built their lead back up to seven points after a three-pointer from
Devon Wallace. Trailing 16-9, Maryville responded with 12-0 run ended by a Gerald Shaw jumper with 5:37 left in the first half.
After leading 23-20 at halftime, the Saints continued their momentum to begin the second half. Five minutes into the second period, Maryville had its largest lead of the game, 32-20, after a lay-in by Armon Provo. MSUB slowly cut into the lead, eventually tying the score at 36. The Yellowjackets completed an 11-0 run with a jumper from
Robby Trabing. Montana State Billings would not surrender the lead, and led for the final eight minutes.
Maryville (3-1) was led by Toney's 13 points, while Shaw added 11. Myles Jerrett grabbed six rebounds, Toney threw seven assists, and Trae Pemberton had two steals.
Montana State Billings will try to be the only 3-0 team in the tournament with a victory over the host, University of Hawaii-Hilo, Wednesday. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. Hawaiian Time, and features live video for $6 and live stats for free on MSUBSports.com.
