Softball Splits on Final Day at Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. -- The Montana State Billings softball team split a pair of games on the final day of the Tournament of Champions Presented by Mizuno Sunday afternoon in California. The Yellowjackets won their first game against San Francisco State 9-3 before falling to No.16 UC-San Diego 3-4.
 
The Yellowjackets finished 3-4 overall in the tournament and were placed into the silver bracket, which was made up of the four teams that placed second in their pools. The Jackets are now 15-17 overall this season after the results of this weekend.
 
Kaycee Hoffman was the top producer for the Yellowjackets during the afternoon despite going 2-for-8, Hoffman scored two runs and had five RBI en route to blasting two home runs, her team-leading 10th and 11th of the year.
 
Hoffman batted .364 for the tournament by going 8-for-22 with four runs, four doubles, two home runs and six RBI. Hoffman teamed with Kelly Parsons and Meg Harasymczuk for six of the Jackets seven home runs this weekend. Parsons was 6-for-18 with a pair of homers and six RBI, while Harasymzcuk also had two home runs, including the game-winner in the victory over Stanislaus Saturday.
 
Annaleisha Parsley had a tremendous weekend going 3-1 with a 2.54 ERA and 22 strikeouts in six appearances. The junior tossed 31 1/3 of an inning allowing 11 runs on 27 hits. Kasie Conder was 0-1 on the weekend with a 2.25 ERA and one save with five strikeouts.
 
Game 1 MSUB 9 – SFSU 3
 
The Yellowjackets jumped on the Gators early and late in the first game of the afternoon, scoring four runs in the first and seventh innings each.
 
The scoring began when Becca Frank and Bobbie Lee both scored on a play where Harasymzcuk reached on an error to put MSUB up 2-0. Tarn Potter later drove in Harasymczuk with a single into center field and would later score herself on a double by Nicole Colpron to build a 4-0 lead.
 
Hoffman later tacked on the fifth run of the game in the top of the third with her first home run of the game that landed over the center field fence.
 
The Gators scratched across three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to two, 5-3, but the Jackets built back onto their lead in the seventh. Hoffman stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and drove a 0-1 pitch over the left field fence for her second tater of the day and first grand slam for the Jackets this season.
 
Parsley got the victory by tossing 5 2/3 of an inning allowing three runs on nine hits and fanned four. Conder took the save, throwing 1 1/3 of an inning, giving up one hit and striking out one.
 
Game 2 MSUB 3 – UCSD 4
 
The Jackets were searching for their second victory over the Tritons during the weekend, and looked well on their way by scoring the first three runs of the ball game. The first run came in the second inning when Parsons hit an RBI-double to right center that scored Potter from first.
 
The final two runs of the game for the Yellowjackets came in the fifth when Lee and Rose Harrington scored on a throwing error by the Tritons' third baseman.
 
UC-San Diego struck back in the sixth with a run that cut the lead to 3-1. Two more runs came across the plate for the Tritons in the seventh as they got a two-RBI single back up the middle with two outs. The final run came in the eighth again with two outs as UCSD got another RBI-hit up the middle.
 
The Yellowjackets will now return home for a crucial four game home stand against the conference leading Vikings of Western Washington. The Vikings were ranked No.6 nationally heading into this weekend's tournament and finished the weekend 5-1 before losing to Chico State in the first game of the championship bracket. Those games are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday with both first games starting at 1 p.m.
