Jacket Softball Sweeps Clan; Take Season Series 5-1 and Break HR Record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
BILLINGS, Mont. -- The Montana State Billings softball team continued their late-season success with a doubleheader sweep of Simon Fraser University Saturday afternoon in Burnaby, B.C. The Jackets swept the twinbill 6-3 and 3-2, and also took the season series five games to one.

The Yellowjackets are now 22-20 on the season and are 17-13 in conference play. The Clan fell to 7-14-1 on the year and is now 7-10-1 in the conference.

With two home runs in the first game, MSUB brought their season total to 55, breaking the team single-season home run record of 54 set by the 2009 team.

In the first game, first baseman Kelsey Haberl put Simon Fraser on the board early as she homered off starting pitcher Annaleisha Parsley in the first inning with Lauren Mew on base, giving the Clan a 2-0 lead.

SFU added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning when left fielder Megan Durrant belted her first homerun of the season, blasting a drive to center field after a full count and increasing the score to 3-0.

The Yellowjackets got their first runs of the game when Madison Smith drove in two runs with a single up the middle. With MSUB still threatening to score, starting pitcher Cara Lukawesky was able to get Tarn Potter to ground into the inning-ending double play and end the threat.

After failing to add insurance in the bottom of the sixth, the Clan brought freshman pitcher Kelsie Hawkins to close out the Yellowjackets in the top of the seventh. However, Becca Frank sent a ball over the centerfield fence with a runner on first to give the Yellowjackets a 4-3 lead. Left fielder Meg Harasymczuk increased the MSUB lead to 6-3 with a two-run home run of her own to seal the victory.

Hawkins was credited with the loss for SFU after surrendering four runs in the top of the seventh inning, moving her record to 1-7 on the year. Parsley earned the win for MSUB, allowing three runs on eight hits.

In the second game, the Yellowjackets were able to get on the board early with a run in the second and fourth innings. However, the Clan responded with a solo home run from Riske and then Durrant's second solo home run of the day.

MSUB broke the tie as a Kelly Parsons single down the left field line and brought home Samantha Church to give the Yellowjackets a 3-2 lead and the eventual win.

Cortney McCallum was dealt the loss, falling to 0-3 while Amanda Todd improved to 6-6 on the season with the win.

The Yellowjackets return home as they host a non-conference doubleheader with the University of Great Falls Thursday afternoon at Cenex Stadium at 1 p.m. The Jackets will then head back into conference action with a doubleheader against Western Oregon University at 1 p.m.
