BILLINGS, Mont
. -- Big hits by Western Washington catcher Jackie Rothenberger helped the Vikings defeat the Montana State Billings softball team 9-4 in game one of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon in Bellingham.

Rain forced the nightcap to be halted in the bottom of the third inning with Western leading 2-1. That game will be resumed at 1:30 p.m. Friday, followed by another contest between the two teams.

Game 1 MSUB 4 – WWU 9

The Vikings knocked around the ball in the first game, scoring nine runs on 10 hits as they handed Annaleisha Parsley her ninth loss of the year (8-9). The junior threw six complete innings, allowing five earned runs and four strikeouts, as a pair of errors sank the Jackets in the first and second innings.

Jackie Rothenberger put the Vikings on top in the first inning after she hit the first of her two home runs on the day, with one out and two on to give WWU a 3-0 lead.

The Jackets looked to stay in the game in the second inning as they struck for two runs of their own when Tarn Potter walked, followed by Kelly Parsons smashing her 12th home run of the season into center field.

The Vikings again got to the Yellowjackets in the bottom of the second when the first three batters of the inning got on base thanks to a walk, a single and an error. After Parsley struck out the next two batters and looked as though she'd pitch out of the jam, Rothenberger hit a grand slam into right field to build a 7-2 lead. Another run in the fourth would make the lead 8-2.

The Yellowjackets tried to mount a comeback in the fifth as Chloe Johnson walked with one out and then senior Bobbie Lee continued her stellar week at the play with a two-run homer to left field, cutting the lead to 8-4. The runs weren't enough though, as WWU scored again in the bottom of the frame for the final run.

Lee and Parsons led the Yellowjackets as they both had a pair of hits and two runs batted in for the game. Kaycee Hoffman and Nicole Colpron were the only other Yellowjackets to record a hit in the game.

Game 2 MSUB 1 – WWU 2 (Bot. 3)

In the uncompleted second game, Western Washington took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Rothenberger drove in one run with a single and a sacrifice fly by Samantha Rutherford brought in the other.

MSUB cut the lead to one in the third on a run-scoring double by Nicole Colpron. WWU had runners on first and second with no outs when the contest was suspended in the third.

Once the Yellowjackets and Vikings complete the current game tomorrow afternoon, the two squads will have one more game that had been scheduled for 3 p.m. Games can be seen tomorrow via the WWU live stats link: http://www.wwugamedaystats.com/livestats/
