Softball Earns Day Two Split with Clan; Takes Series 3-1

BILLINGS, Mont. -- The bats were alive at Cenex Stadium Sunday afternoon as the Montana State Billings softball team earned a split with the Simon Fraser University Clan in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action, taking game one, 13-5, and dropping game two, 7-6.

 

The Yellowjackets saw their record move to 9-12 overall and 7-9 in conference play as they took their first series victory of the season, winning the series 3-1. The Clan moved their record to 4-6 overall and 4-6 in the conference.

 

Angela Lingle had the best hitting performance today and during the weekend, going 4-for-4 this afternoon with two home runs, a double, two runs scored and four RBI. This weekend she hit .667, going 6-for-9 with a pair of runs, two doubles, two homers and five RBI.

 

Seniors Kelly Parsons and Bobbie Lee went 3-for-5 this afternoon and combined for two runs scored, four RBI and Parsons had another home run, her third of the weekend. Parsons' homer in game one also tied the GNAC record for most consecutive games with a home run (4), and she also broke the school record for career RBI (114), passing Stephanie Gosselin (111) for first on that list.

 

Eight players hit .400 or better for the Yellowjackets during the weekend series as MSUB hit .407 during the weekend as a team. The Jackets had their best offensive output during the weekend, scoring 37 runs on 46 hits with nine home runs.

 

Pitching also improved during the weekend as the three player staff had an ERA of 4.04 with 15 earned runs being scored on 31 hits, while fanning 18.

 

Game 1 MSUB 13 – SFU 5 (6 Innings)

 

MSUB fell behind early in game one as freshman Amanda Todd got the start for the Jackets. The Clan struck for first in the top of the second when Brittany Mayers took Todd deep for a two-run homer on the first pitch.

 

Two more runs came in for Simon Fraser in the third inning using small ball as the Clan scored on a double that squeezed passed the third base bag and down the left field line, and then on single into left field.

 

But the Yellowjacket offense answered back in a big way during the bottom of the inning, exploding for five runs on four hits.

 

After Becca Frank walked and Rose Harrington singled on a bunt, the two speedy Yellowjackets pulled off a double steal to get themselves into scoring position. Jenna VanEykeren then slapped a slow roller to shortstop, but the quick-footed Frank beat the throw and slid around the tag for the first run.

 

In the next at bat, Meg Harasymczuk sent a rocket off the ankle of SFU starting pitcher Cara Lukawesky and into right field for a two-RBI single, cutting the lead to 4-3. After the second out in the inning, Parsons stepped into the first pitch she saw and sent it over the right field fence for a two-run shot and gave MSUB the 5-4 lead.

 

The Jackets added two more runs in the fourth inning when Kaycee Hoffman doubled to right field, scoring Harasymczuk and VanEykeren on the play, making the score 7-4.

 

Lingle hit her first bomb of the day, a solo shot, into center field during the bottom of the fifth, took increase the lead to 8-4. After a pitching change, Lee hit a triple, followed by a double from Frank that scored Lee and put the Jackets up by five.

 

The final two runs of the fifth inning came from VanEykeren as she launched a shot into left field, scoring Frank on the play. The game ended in the sixth when Parsons singled through left side to make the score 12-5, followed by an RBI-single from Frank that scored Samantha Church.

 

Todd (1-3) took the win in the game, throwing 4.0 innings with four runs on five hits and the freshman fanned three. Kasie Conder came on for two innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits and earning the save, her first of the season.

 

Game 2 MSUB 6 – SFU 7 (8 Innings)

 

Falling behind 1-0 in the first inning of game two, MSUB tied the game in the second when Lee hit a single into center field, scoring Tarn Potter.

 

SFU then scored two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings and another run in the sixth inning, while the Jackets scored runs in the fourth and fifth to trail 6-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

 

With Rachel Eisenmann on second and VanEykeren on first, Lingle pinch hit for Nicole Colpron and belted a three-run home run over the left center fence to tie the game at 6-6.

 

The game moved into extra innings where the Clan took advantage of a Conder pitch that was sent out to right center to take the 7-6 edge and victory.

 

Annaleisha Parsley started the game for MSUB and went 6.0 innings with six runs, four earned, on nine hits and struck out one batter. Conder threw 2.0 innings with one run on two hits and fanned two.

 

The Yellowjackets will remain home next weekend as they play host to visiting Saint Martin's University. The Jackets and Saints will have first pitch Saturday, Mar. 26, at 1 p.m. and will then play again on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
