BILLINGS, Mont. – Taylor Rohde's game-high 31 points and eight rebounds helped propel the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves past the Montana State Billings men's basketball team Saturday night at Alterowitz Gymnasium, 81-64. The Yellowjackets fall to 5-15 on the year and 3-10 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, while UAA improves to 17-6 on the year and 9-3 in the GNAC.
Jaxon Myaer paced the Yellowjackets with his 19 points on 7 of 14 shooting from the floor and 2 of 2from the line. Myaer also tallied three assists on the night, while DeAndre Chambers collected 11 points in 28 minutes. The Jackets also had two players with eight points each and a pair of players that led the team with three rebounds.
MSUB shot 46.8 percent from the floor during the game, including 42.9 percent from the arc, while connecting on 11 of their 14 opportunities from the line. The Jackets turned the ball over 10 times in the game and were out rebounded by the Seawolves 37-19 in the contest, but won the battle off the bench 23-13.
Behind Rohde's 31 points, Brandon Walker also chipped in 14 points, while Mario Gill collected 12 points and seven rebounds. Casey Robinson also had a strong game with six assists to go with his eight points.
UAA connected on 51.0 percent of their shots, but struggled from the arc, shooting 23.8 percent for the game and were 85.7 percent from the free throw line. The Seawolves dominated the paint area with 34 points compared to MSUB's 12. They also scored 13 second chance points and never trailed during the game, building their largest lead at 16 with 1:22 to go in the game.
MSUB came out of the opening tip strong, staying with every blow the Seawolves delivered. After trailing by seven, 21-14, with 8:53 to go in the first half, MSUB made a push with two big 3-pointers from Myaer and Raason Young, cutting the lead down to three, 23-20, with just over six minutes to go.
The Seawolves then went on a small run, building their lead back up to 10 with 3:27 to go in the half on a pair of free throws by Walker. UAA took a six point lead into the half, leading 40-34 at the break.
UAA was unable to create distance from the Yellowjackets until a jumper in the paint by Walker with 12:02 remaining started a 17-3 run over the next six minutes to build an 18 point lead, 71-53.
The Seawolves put the game to rest down the stretch with multiple put-back baskets and four free throws to go on to win by the 17 point margin.
The Yellowjackets now face their final two road tests of the year next week as they travel to Nampa, ID, on Thursday, Feb. 10, to take on Northwest Nazarene and to Ellensburg, WA, to play the nationally ranked Wildcats of Central Washington on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to tip at 7 p.m. local time and can be viewed via webcast and live stats.
