BILLINGS, Mont. -- Behind a strong shooting performance that included 14 three-pointers and a game-high 20 points from
Antoine Proctor, the Montana State Billings men's basketball team drubbed the visiting Colorado Christian Cougars 104-54 Tuesday night in non-conference action.
The Yellowjackets (3-2) shot a season-best 59.4 percent (38-64) from the field, going 14 of 22 from beyond the arc and were 14 of 20 from the charity stripe. The Yellowjackets also reached the 100 point mark for the first time since Feb. 13, 2010 at Western Oregon in a 103-95 win.
MSUB had six players in double figures, including Proctor who was 7 of 10 from the field and 3 of 5 from deep.
Taylor Stevens had his best game as Yellowjacket, scoring 17 points and grabbing five boards.
Robert Mayes led the team in rebounding with eight boards to go along with his 10 points.
Jaxon Myaer and
Cameron Cusworth chipped in 11 points, while
Preston Richards contributed 13 points and six boards.
The Yellowjackets dominated the glass, swiping 44 boards compared to the 28 by the Cougars. The Yellowjackets also forced 25 turnovers which led to 28 points, but turned the ball over 21 times also.
MSUB had over half of its points come from the bench as they outscored the Cougars 59-12 outside of the starting five. The Jackets also dominated inside with a staggering 40-14 edge in the paint.
The Yellowjackets never trailed during the game, opening with a 7-0 run, but the Cougars answered, tying the game up at 7-7. After a trey by
David Arnold broke a 9-9 tie, MSUB never allowed the Cougars to get any closer than three points.
The game was broken wide open when
Robby Trabing connected on a layup in the paint with 11 minutes to go, sparking a 20-3 run that helped MSUB build a 39-16 lead over a seven minute period. The Yellowjackets took a 50-22 lead into the break.
MSUB didn't lift off the gas in the second half as they fired on all cylinders, shooting 55.9 percent in the half and connecting on six treys. The Jackets eventually built their lead by as many as 50 with just under a minute to go.
The Cougars (0-1) were led in scoring by Daniel Pilkington who dropped 14 points and had five boards. Two other players, Josh McBeth and Abram Ziemer, scored in double figures with 11 and 10, respectively. CCU shot 30.5 percent from the floor and struggled behind the line, going 3 of 19 from deep.
The Yellowjackets will try to continue their hot shooting after the Thanksgiving holiday, traveling to Bismarck, N.D., to take on the Northern Sun's University of Mary on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
