Barnes’ Buzzer-Beater Lifts Jackets Past Saints, 63-62

Box Score

LACEY, Wash. – Coming off a missed shot by Jaxon Myaer, Montana State Billings' Tyler Barnes soared in for a rebound and put-back as time expired to send the Yellowjackets to their fifth victory of the season and snapping a four game slide, defeating host Saint Martin's Saturday night in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

With the win the Yellowjackets improved to 5-13 on the season and 3-8 in the conference, while the Saints fell to 11-9 on the year and 4-6 in the conference.

“I'm really happy for our players,” said head coach George Pfeifer. “We've played three games on the road in the past two weeks and easily the outcome could have come out either way in all three games. During that stretch our guys have stayed the course and tonight was a defining moment in their character. We've continued to talk about playing better basketball as a team and finding ways to win games, and our guys did that tonight. Now we need to build momentum heading into a week of home games.”

The Saints held a 58-57 edge with 1:12 remaining in the ballgame after Blake Poole connected on a pair of free throws. On the next trip down the floor for the Jackets, DeAndre Chambers connected on two of his 13 points to give MSUB the lead again with 43 second to go.

SMU's Jeremy Green then sank a jumper inside the arc to regain the lead for the Saints just 12 seconds later. But Myaer then drove to the basket and drew a foul, connecting on both opportunities for two of his team-high 17 points and giving MSUB the lead back at 61-60.

Saint Martin's then pushed the ball back up the floor as time was wounding down, finding Poole underneath where he was fouled by Emery Henning. The nation's second leading rebounder went to the line and converted his chances to give SMU a 62-61 lead with just six seconds to go.

Off the in-bound, Myaer raced toward the bucket and put up his shot, but the ball only found iron. As the clock wound down, Barnes came in tapped the ball in for a put back and the win at the buzzer. It was just two of Barnes' five points scored on the night.

Along with his 17 points, Myaer had nine assists and a team-high five boards. Also in double-figures with Myaer and Chambers was Henning, scoring 10 points and pulling down four rebounds on the night.

The Jackets shot 59.6 percent from the floor for the game, including 62.5 percent in the second half, and shot a season-best 66.7 percent beyond the arc. MSUB was able to win the game despite making just five trips to the free throw line.

Defensively, MSUB held Saint Martin's to 44.4 percent shooting from the field for the game and just 31.3 percent from the 3-point line. Poole ended the night with another double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds, while Jeremy Green scored 14 points for the Saints.

The Yellowjackets actually held a 10 point lead midway through the first half, but saw that lead evaporate toward the end of the half, leading only by three, 29-26, going into the locker room.

The Saints would then slowly build a nine point lead, 49-40, at the nine minute mark in the second half, but they too saw their largest lead of the game disappear as the game wore on.

MSUB won the battle inside, outscoring the Saints 22-16 in the paint, but were virtually outmatched in the other statistical categories besides the final score.

The Yellowjackets now return home for a pair of conference match-ups with the return trips of the University of Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. and the University of Alaska Anchorage on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 7:30 p.m. as part of a double-header with the women's team.
