Yellowjackets Fall in Exhibition with Idaho State, 92-79

Box Score

POCATELLO, Idaho – In the first exhibition of the 2010-11 men's basketball season, the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets were unable to overcome an Idaho State team that shot 49.2 percent from the field, including going 52.9 percent beyond the arc, falling 92-79 Tuesday evening.

“I thought we played a good game despite fumbling the ball and turning it over early,” said head coach George Pfeifer. “We played very anxious at the beginning, but slowed down and started to get some good looks and made some good shots. We dug our own ditch a lot of the times but we dug ourselves out and kept coming. The things we need to work on are fixable and we saw some things we liked, but credit a very good Idaho State team for the way they played.”

The Yellowjackets were paced by 17 points and six rebounds from senior Raason Young (Washington D.C.). Young was 7-of-15 from the field and also had a team-high five assists. DeAndre Chambers (Monroe, NC) was also in double-digits, scoring 16 points and four rebounds, while Robert Mayes (Houston, TX) and Emery Henning (Great Falls, MT) each had 13 points apiece as Henning added a team-high nine boards.

The Bengals were led in points by Broderick Gilchrest who scored a game-high 21 points, while Abner Moreira had a game-high 20 rebounds and 10 points. Three other ISU players were in double figures.

Idaho State jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the first six minutes after Kenny McGowen knocked down a three pointer at the 14 minute mark. The Bengals held a 12 point lead at 39-27 with 3:46 to go, but the Yellowjackets gradually cut into that lead after three consecutive layups by Mayes and Henning to close out the half on a 12-2 run.

MSUB was 14-for-32 from the field in the first half and 5-of-12 from downtown as the team went 8-11 from the line. ISU shot 53.1 percent (17-32) from the field in the half and was dismal 2-for-11 from deep.

As the second half began, Idaho State managed to build a 10 point lead at 52-42, but again the Jackets dug down deep and battled back to within five at 57-52 with 13:10 to go after Kevin Terry (Brooklyn, NY) knocked down a trey.

The Bengals continued to keep MSUB at bay, continuously keeping the lead around nine or 12 points, but the Jackets managed one last push as Chambers hit a three at the 4:10 mark and Henning got a layup with 3:40 left to cut the lead back to six. Free throws down the stretch didn't allow MSUB back into the game as ISU went on for the 13 point lead.

For the game MSUB shot 44.8 percent from the field and went 9-for-24 from deep (37.5%) and were 10-of-15 from the line. The Yellowjackets scored 17 points off of 12 turnovers, but were outscored 40-36 in the paint and 33-18 off the bench.

The Jackets have one more tune-up game before beginning the regular season as they take on Eastern Washington University on Monday, Nov. 8, at 7:05 p.m. in Cheney, Wash.

The Yellowjackets will open their regular season with three consecutive home contests, the opener coming on Tuesday, Nov. 16, against the University of Mary at 7 p.m. MSUB then plays Minot State (Nov. 20) and cross-town rival Rocky Mountain College (Nov. 24) to kick off the campaign.
