Park High School: Was an all-state selection as a pitcher and first baseman after logging 148 strikeouts and hitting five home runs as a junior…was also a two-year member of the National Honor Society, and was on his school's honor roll for four years…also competed in basketball for four seasons as a guard and football for two years as a quarterback for the Rangers.

Coach Waddoups on Lay: "Sterling is one the most athletic guys we have in the program.  He brings a positive energy to the field and game.  He has the ability to command the strike zone with plus movement from the left side which gives us the ability to use him in so many rolls. Excited to watch him compete on the mound in big situations."

Lay on choosing MSUB: "I decided to commit to MSUB because of how close it is to home mainly. Also, my friends Jordan Lehrer and Jakim Ricketts will be playing on the basketball team next season. My lifelong catcher and cousin (Zander Petrich) will also be playing for MSUB, and I am happy to play with him again. Being able to have family members and friends come over for games will be great as well."
