With a unique and historic opportunity this spring, the Montana State University Billings women’s basketball team traveled to Barcelona, Spain both to compete and for an unforgettable cultural experience.

The 5,000-mile journey took place in mid-May, with the Yellowjackets playing two exhibition contests under unfamiliar European rules. Stops along the way included numerous historic cathedrals and landmarks, the Olympic Stadium, and a trip to a world-class soccer match.

The Buzz in Barca blog features highlights from the trip, and all content was composed by MSUB players. The blog covers five days of the journey, with two players each contributing a report on May 17-21.

Check the Buzz in Barca home page here to read each of the nine installments of the blog as they are released each day. The blog posts will also include photo galleries and video highlights from the team’s trip.

An NCAA provision allows for member schools to send teams to a foreign country to compete once every four years.

BARCELONA – On our first full day in Spain, we drove to a town called Girona. Girona was a really pretty, small town, with a lot of beautiful pieces of architecture. We split up into a couple small groups and spent the day walking around the town, taking lots of pictures and exploring all of the interesting places throughout the city. I spent most of my day with Tiana and her dad, Janessa, Jeanann and Jenny.

BARCELONA – For our second day in Spain, we went to the small, old fishing village of Tossa de Mar. Instead of our usual travel of greyhound bus, we took a large boat ride to this village with stops along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The boat had upper deck seating where we all had great views of the water and coastline.

BARCELONA – On Friday, May 19,, we left our first hotel and headed for the city of Barcelona. We arrived at our second hotel, and we decided to go to Catalonia and walk around and through all the shops in the heart of the city. The main strip that we walked down was called the La Rambla. All week we were warned to make sure we kept all of our things locked and close due to the number of pick pockets around.

BARCELONA – During the day on Saturday we went on a bus tour. Clive took us around the city of Barcelona to show us more sites that were not in the center of the city. This tour was so much fun and the architecture throughout Barcelona is amazing. We started the tour by going to La Sagrada Familia, which was built by the artist Gaudi. This cathedral was amazing! The amount of detail on the outside of the building was incredible. There were two different sides to the building. The old side was about Christ’s birth and the new side was about his death. The two sides were built really differently from one another, which made this building really unique. We did not go inside on this day, but it was amazing to see the outside! The uniqueness and amount of detail that was contained in this building was absolutely incredible and very worth seeing.

BARCELONA – The first day of our trip was filled with hours of exploring the town of Girona and was topped off with the first of our two games, but not until 9 p.m. The town of Girona is extremely unique in the fact that a good portion of it seems very medieval. We began the day in one group, but due to the fact that there was so much to see we ended up breaking up into several smaller groups. It was fun because we would be wandering down a random street or ally and run into someone from our group!

BARCELONA – This was our second day in Spain. On this day we woke up early and took a boat tour along the coast to a little town called Tosa De Mar which was an old fishing town. Along the way we stopped at many beaches along the coast to pick people up and drop some off. We also stopped at one point and some of the crew on the boat fed the fish bread and they all came right next to the boat. The first thing we you see when you get to the town, Tosa De Mar, is the famous castle that over looked the Mediterranean Sea.

BARCELONA – Saturday, May 20, we had the opportunity to see a little bit of everything in Barcelona via bus. Our tour began in the heart of Barcelona where we were able to view the outside of La Sagrada Famalia. This is the most famous cathedral in Spain built by the well-known Gaudi. The church was amazing. The detail all the way around it was jaw dropping, and the church is not even finished yet. It took up a whole block by itself and was the tallest building for miles. Our next stop on the tour was the Parc de Montjuic.
