SHERIDAN, Wyo. — The Montana State University Billings golf teams opened the 2026-27 season at the Travis Roy Memorial, with both Yellowjacket squads finishing sixth at The Powder Horn Golf Club. The MSUB women finished with a three-round score of 951 (321-317-313), while the men carded a 903 (307-302-294) across 54 holes.
 
The Yellowjackets showed improvement throughout the tournament, with both teams posting their lowest team score in the final round. The women closed with a 313 on Tuesday after rounds of 321 and 317, while the men followed opening rounds of 307 and 302 with a 294 in the final round. On the women's side, MSUB tied for the tournament lead in par-3 scoring with a 3.35 average and ranked fifth in par-4 scoring at 4.57. The men's team ranked seventh in par-4 scoring at 4.33, and seventh in par-5 scoring at 4.96.
 
"Mostly satisfied with our teams this week with positives to take away from both sides," said head coach Adam Buie. "It was a tough weather week with wind every single day in Sheridan, gusting up to 30-35 mph."

Sophomore Emy Cambuzat led the women's team individually, finishing sixth with a three-round total of 229 (+13). Cambuzat opened with a 78, followed with a 78 in the second round and closed with a 73. She recorded eight birdies during the tournament and finished tied for fourth in the field in par-4 scoring with a 4.30 average. She also ranked fourth individually in par-3 scoring at 3.00, helping the Yellowjackets establish one of the strongest par-3 performances in the tournament.

Pygmy Kompoj finished tied for 18th at 240, carding rounds of 76, 81 and 83. Kompoj also produced eight birdies and tied for 15th in the field in par-5 scoring with a 5.17 average. Ella Tannenberger finished 27th at 243, improving to a 78 in the third round after opening the tournament with an 84 and shooting an 81 in the second round.
 
Tannenberger also recorded one of MSUB's two eagles in the tournament. Maria Briceno Vargas tied for 28th at 244 after rounds of 84, 78 and 82, while Kyleigh McGowen finished tied for 30th at 245 with rounds of 85, 80 and 80. Hanna Boyd rounded out the MSUB lineup in a tie for 35th at 256 (+40), carding rounds of 83, 81 and 83.

The women's team moved up from a 321 in the opening round to a 317 in the second round before closing the tournament with its best score of 313. MSUB's final-round total helped the Yellowjackets finish sixth in the 12-team field, just one stroke behind fifth-place Augustana at 950. Colorado State Pueblo won the tournament with a 923, followed by Westmont and Westminster, which tied for second at 925.
 
"Women's team didn't quite show their potential", Buie said. "The last two rounds, we were the best team in the field for the first nine and then falter the back. We have to get better at finishing. It was a very slow pace of play, but that was the case for every team there. Regardless, we posted solid results with all six players finishing in the top half of the field and showed we have a very deep roster.  Emy clearly worked hard this summer and had the best tournament of her career, tying for 6th place. She posted 3 rounds in the 70s and finished very high in a good regional field. Quick turnaround for the Women as we leave Friday for another good event at Westminster in Utah where there will be 14 West Region team's."

On the men's side, sophomore Aubrey Kelley paced MSUB with a seventh-place finish at 219 (+3). Kelley opened with a 76 before firing a 71 in the second round and closing with a 72 in the final round. His 71 was MSUB's lowest individual round of the tournament, and he finished tied for second in the field with 15 birdies. Kelley also tied for sixth in par-5 scoring with a 4.50 average.

Bowdie Fox finished tied for 29th at 227 (+11), posting rounds of 75, 78 and 74. Cameron Hackmann followed in a tie for 31st at 228 (+12), shooting 80 in the opening round, followed by back-to-back 74's. Pete Netrnilweerachot tied for 35th at 229 (+13) with rounds of 76, 79 and 74. Netrnilweerachot recorded an eagle during the tournament and tied for 11th in the field in par-5 scoring with a 4.58 average.

Tanner Moody finished tied for 64th at 242 (+26), recording rounds of 84, and two 79's, while Ryan Badger placed 70th at 248 (+32) after shooting 84, 82 and 82. As a team, the Yellowjackets totaled 166 pars and 42 birdies, while their 294 final-round score represented a nine-stroke improvement from their opening-round total. MSUB finished sixth in the 12-team field, one stroke behind fifth-place Colorado Mesa and just one stroke ahead of seventh-place Colorado State Pueblo.

The men's tournament was won by Colorado Christian with an 864, followed by Colorado Mines at 868 and Westminster at 873. MSUB's 903 included a 307 in the opening round, a 302 in the second and a 294 in the final round, marking a steady progression throughout the three-day event. The Yellowjackets also finished seventh in par-4 and par-5 scoring, while Kelley and Netrnilweerachot both ranked among the tournament leaders in par-5 performance.
 
"Men's team had a nice showing to open our season in 6th place", said Buie. "Lots of good things to take away from the week. We improved our score each round, kept climbing the leaderboard, and the last round 294 was really solid. Aubrey Kelley followed his GNAC freshman of the year season with a top ten finish this week and was tied for 2nd in the field with 15 birdies. As usual he put on a ball striking clinic hitting 44 out of 54 greens in regulation. I really like where this team is right now. The Men have a week to prepare for the Washington trip where we play back-to-back events in GNAC tournaments."

UP NEXT: The Yellowjackets women return to action Sept. 20-21 at the Westminster Wasatch in Salt Lake City, Utah, at Glenmoor Golf Club, while the MSUB men next compete Sept. 25-26 at the Kevin Bishop Invite at The Home Course in Dupont, Washington.
