BILLINGS, Mont.
— The Montana State University Billings men's basketball team rolled to an 89-67 win over Simon Fraser on Saturday afternoon at Alterowitz Gymnasium, securing its fourth straight 20-win season during the program's annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) game.
Fans across Alterowitz participated in a "red out" while MSUB took the floor in custom MMIW warmup shirts, recognizing and honoring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and raising awareness for an issue that impacts local and national communities.
With the win, MSUB improved to 20-6 overall and 9-4 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, marking the fourth straight season the program has reached the 20-win mark. Three of those seasons have come under head coach
Luke Fennelly, and the four-year streak stands as the longest in school history.
"Having it be the 20
th win is certainly a nice feeling," said coach Fennelly. "These guys have definitely put in the work and stayed together as a unit, so it is much deserved."
MSUB controlled the game on both ends of the floor, shooting an even 50.0 percent from the field while piling up 52 points in the paint and 23 fast-break points. The Yellowjackets also forced 19 Simon Fraser turnovers, converting them into 26 points, while winning the rebounding battle 47-30.
Mason Landdeck led the Yellowjackets with 19 points, adding five rebounds and a steal.
Jonas La Tour followed with 17 points and eight rebounds, while
Croix Cox delivered an efficient 16 points and seven boards.
Miles Gurske stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, seven assists, and five steals, and
Jakob Milling chipped in eight points, five rebounds, and six assists to round out a balanced MSUB effort.
"It was another great team effort by our guys," Fennelly said. "I really liked the energy effort they showed the entire game. We were motivated to avenge our previous loss to SFU and our mentality proved to be in the right place. Our pressure started to bother them, but I was really proud of our offensive rebounds and the way we shared the basketball today."
Game Flow
The opening minutes featured an early push from Simon Fraser, but MSUB quickly settled in and used a 7-0 run to take a 17-16 lead midway through the first half — an advantage they would not relinquish. From there, MSUB's depth and balance began to take over, with the Yellowjackets consistently attacking the rim, forcing turnovers, and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities.
By halftime, MSUB had built a 42-27 lead, thanks in part to a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Landdeck to cap the opening half. The Yellowjackets shot efficiently in the first 20 minutes and dictated the pace defensively, holding the Red Leafs to just 33.3 percent shooting while forcing 11 turnovers. Those mistakes quickly turned into points on the other end, allowing MSUB to create separation before the break.
The second half opened with MSUB continuing to attack downhill, scoring on four of its first five possessions to quickly extend the margin beyond 20. By the 15:23 mark, the lead had grown to 23 points, and the Yellowjackets continued to pour it on from there. At one point midway through the half, MSUB's advantage ballooned to 34 points as the home side overwhelmed Simon Fraser with ball movement, interior scoring, and relentless defensive pressure.
Even with the outcome well in hand, the Yellowjackets maintained their intensity. MSUB continued to crash the glass, push in transition, and rotate freely to keep fresh legs on the floor. Late baskets from
Gabe Hatler in the paint and a three-pointer from
Jesiah Stutts helped cap the scoring as the Yellowjackets closed out the 89-67 win.
