BILLINGS, Mont. — The Montana State University Billings golf teams put together a historic performance on their home course, as both the women and men captured team championships at the Yellowjacket Fall Invitational at Lake Hills Golf Course. The women claimed the title with a program-record 54-hole score of 898, while the men finished first at 848 with senior Bowdie Fox capping the championship performance by winning the individual men's title in a two-hole playoff.

The Yellowjackets combined team depth, career-best performances and record-setting rounds throughout the 54-hole tournament, with both squads producing some of the lowest team scores in program history. The women's 898 broke the previous Montana State University Billings record for lowest three-round team score by 33 strokes, while their second-round 290 established another program record as the lowest single-round team score in women's golf history. On the men's side, the Yellowjackets' 848 tied for the third-lowest three-round team score in program history, while their 276 in the second round marked the fourth-lowest single-round team score in MSUB men's golf history.

"Both teams had great showings at our home Fall Yellowjacket at Lake Hills," said head coach Adam Buie. "Weather was amazing, we had good scores across the board, and the event was successful for everyone. Women's side we had five players in the top eight and three in the top five. Men's side was a great week as well. We were disappointed to not get a 3rd round in at both of the Washington tournaments so the guys were all eager to get out and play in great weather at home." The women established the tone early before putting together their most impressive round of the tournament on Monday. After opening with a 303, the Yellowjackets fired a remarkable 290 in the second round to move into position to capture the team championship. MSUB then closed with a 305 to finish at 898, completing a three-round performance that will go down as the best 54-hole team score in program history.

Individually, junior Pygmy Kompoj led the way for the Yellowjackets, finishing second overall with a 219. Kompoj's three-round total represented a new career best, while her second-round 71 (-1) established a new career-low round. Her 71 also tied for the fourth-lowest individual round in Montana State University Billings women's golf history. Kompoj was especially consistent throughout the tournament, carding rounds of 76, 71 and 72 while finishing just one stroke behind the individual champion.

Junior Ella Tannenberger and sophomore Hanna Boyd both finished tied for fourth place at 228, with each player establishing a new 54-hole career best. Tannenberger opened with a 75 and followed with rounds of 73 and 80, while Boyd posted rounds of 75, 75 and 78. Boyd's opening-round 75 also represented a new single-round career best. Junior Rachel Rerick finished three strokes behind the pair at 231 in seventh place individually, setting a new three-round career best with rounds of 83, 71 and 77. Rerick's second-round 71 (-1) was a career low and tied Kompoj for the fourth-lowest individual round in program history.

Junior Maria Briceno also delivered a career-best tournament, finishing at 232 tied for eighth after rounds of 78, 76 and 78. Senior Chloe Van Strien recorded a 252 over three rounds, establishing another 54-hole career best. Orraya Tipasthien recorded a three-round score of 250 while sophomore Emy Cambuzat also competed for the Yellowjackets but did not finish the tournament, recording a DNF. Across the tournament, the women continued to pile up strong scoring numbers, with Tannenberger and Rerick each recording eight birdies and Kompoj adding seven.

"Hopefully Emy Cambuzat and Kyleigh McGowen are able to go to Rapid City as we are taking the whole team," coach Buie said. "Emy had to withdraw in round three due to back issues. Kyleigh was slated to play the #1 seed for Lake Hills before an ankle injury kept her out." The men's championship was equally impressive, with MSUB combining for an 848 over three rounds. The Yellowjackets opened with a 280 before producing their fourth-lowest single-round team score in program history with a 276 in round two. MSUB closed with a 292 to finish at 848, tying for the third-lowest three-round team score in the history of the program. The Yellowjackets' depth was evident throughout the leaderboard, with several players establishing career-best 54-hole totals.

Fox provided the most dramatic finish of the tournament. The senior finished regulation tied for first at 210 alongside teammate Mark Pramounmat, forcing an individual playoff for the championship. After the first playoff hole did not determine a winner, Fox secured the individual crown on the second playoff hole with a birdie. The victory marked a standout finish to a tournament in which Fox produced the best round of his collegiate career.

Fox's second-round 67 (-5) was a new career low and tied for the lowest individual tournament round in MSUB men's golf history at Lake Hills. He followed an opening-round 71 with the 67 before closing with a 72, finishing at 210. The 67 was one of the defining rounds of the tournament and helped propel the Yellowjackets toward their historic team score while also putting Fox in position to ultimately win the individual championship.

Pramounmat matched Fox at 210 to finish tied for first through 54 holes before the playoff. His performance included a 68 (-4) in the second round, tying his single-round career low. Pramounmat's 210 also established a new 54-hole career best, giving MSUB two players tied at the top of the individual leaderboard after regulation. Sophomore Aubrey Kelley finished third at 211, setting a new three-round career best while also tying his career low with a 69 in the second round.

Senior Ryder Conner posted a 217 in 5th place to establish a new 54-hole career best, while junior Kaopun Akmaneenin finished at 219 for another career-best three-round performance to finish in 8th place individually. Sophomore Cameron Hackmann added a 225 tying for 15th, also setting a new 54-hole career best, and junior Tanner Moody tied for 26th recording a 243 to establish a new three-round career best. Pete Netrnilweerachot and Ryan Badger rounded out the MSUB group tied for 10th and 18th place, carding three-round scores of 221 and 227 respectively.

The individual accomplishments further highlighted the depth of the championship performance. On the women's side, Kompoj, Tannenberger, Briceno, Van Strien, Boyd and Rerick all established new 54-hole career bests, while Kompoj and Rerick each posted career-low 71s. Boyd also established a career-best single round with a 75. On the men's side, Pramounmat, Kelley, Conner, Akmaneenin, Hackmann and Moody all recorded new 54-hole career bests, while Fox and Pramounmat each produced career-low or career-tying rounds.

With the two team championships and Fox's playoff victory, the Yellowjackets closed their home tournament with one of the most accomplished performances of the fall season. The women's 898 and 290 rewrote the MSUB record book, the men's 848 and 276 added another pair of historic team marks, and a total of 12 Yellowjackets established new 54-hole career bests across the two teams.

UP NEXT: That wraps up the fall season for the Yellowjacket men, but the women's team returns to action Oct. 12-13 at the South Dakota Mines Fall Hardrocker in Rapid City, South Dakota.

"The women still have two more events with SD Mines tournament at Red Rock in Rapid City coming up next week and our trip to Midwestern State Texas following that," said coach Buie. "The men's official A team schedule is over but most of the team is going to compete as individuals at Red Rock as well to get more tournament experience. Each team is in a really good spot at the moment." Yellowjacket Invitational (men)
