‘Jackets Fall Short in Road Contest to Alaska Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alas. – The Montana State University Billings men's basketball team (16-6, 5-4 GNAC) dropped an 84-70 decision to the University of Alaska Anchorage (14-6, 6-3 GNAC) Saturday night at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Although the Yellowjackets trailed for much of the contest, they remained competitive in several key statistical areas. MSUB finished with advantages in bench scoring (16-10), fastbreak points (12-8), and points off turnovers (19-12). The difference ultimately came from long range, where Anchorage knocked down 11 three-pointers while shooting 44 percent from beyond the arc. MSUB connected on six threes at a 27 percent clip.

Mason Landdeck paced the Yellowjackets with a game-high 22 points, shooting 7-of-14 from the field and 5-of-10 from three-point range, while also leading the team with five assists. Croix Cox followed with 13 points, six rebounds, and two blocks, while Brandon Tchouya added 12 points. Miles Gurske rounded out the scoring effort with 10 points and pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.

Game Flow
The Yellowjackets came out firing to open the game, using early contributions from Cox and Landdeck to jump out to a 7-3 lead in the opening minutes. Anchorage answered with a defensive stretch that held MSUB scoreless for over three minutes, tying the game before Gurske stopped the run with four consecutive points to give the Yellowjackets an 11-7 advantage at the 14:38 mark. Momentum quickly shifted back to the Seawolves, who responded with an 8-0 run to take control.

By the midpoint of the first half, Anchorage had pushed its lead to nine before Landdeck scored four straight points to pull MSUB back within five. The two teams traded baskets for much of the remainder of the half, with both squads entering the bonus early due to a physical stretch of play. Anchorage created separation late, going on an 11-4 run to build a 13-point lead before Tchouya halted the run with a basket at the 2:33 mark. The Seawolves closed the half strong, scoring the final five points to take a 46-32 lead into the locker room.

Needing an early spark in the second half, the Yellowjackets delivered with an impressive 12-3 run to open the period. Landdeck accounted for eight of those points as MSUB cut the deficit to just five. The pace slowed over the next several minutes as both teams traded baskets, but MSUB continued to chip away. Near the halfway point of the half, the Yellowjackets pulled within just three points on a 6-2 run.

Just over a minute later, Jonas La Tour tied the game at 57-57 after knocking down his first three-pointer of the night, completing MSUB's comeback. Anchorage quickly regained momentum, responding with a decisive 10-0 run fueled by Sylas Williams, who finished with a game-high 25 points. Landdeck stopped the surge with a jumper at the six-minute mark, but the Seawolves again extended their lead, pushing the margin to 14 with just under five minutes remaining.

MSUB made one final push down the stretch, highlighted by four points from La Tour, an and-one three-point play from Cox, and a free throw from Tchouya to cut the deficit to 10 with three minutes left. Anchorage, however, controlled the final minutes and closed out the game to secure the 84-70 victory.
