SPEARFISH, S.D.- It was a standout performance for the Montana State University Billings golf program at the Homestake Invite, with sparks flying on both sides of competition. Junior
Orraya Tipasathien captured the individual title, becoming the winningest women's golfer in MSUB history with her sixth career victory—all achieved in a 12-month span. Meanwhile, the MSUB men's team dominated the leaderboard, securing the team title by a comfortable margin.
"Overall it was a very solid week," said head coach
Adam Buie. "Happy to see the men pick up a win and happy to see our women's teams take second and third, showing our depth 1-10. We placed five total golfers on the All-Tournament Team."
The Yellowjacket men posted a team score of 605 (309-296), finishing nine strokes ahead of South Dakota Mines. The challenging layout at Spearfish Canyon Country Club saw high average scores across the field—81.83 on day one and 79.67 on day two—but the 'Jackets excelled, especially on the par fives, where they led all teams with a 4.96 scoring average.
Leading the charge was
Ryder Conner, who shot a 75 in the first round and followed with a 73 to finish third overall out of 36 competitors in his MSUB debut. Close behind were
Kaopun Akmaneenin and Aubrey Kelly, who placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Akmaneenin carded back-to-back 75s for a total of 150, while Kelly went 77-74 for a 151.
Rounding out the starting five were
Mark Pramounmat, making his collegiate debut with a 156 to tie for eighth, and
Peyton Toney, who finished tied for 20th with a 161.
As an individual,
Payton Black made a strong impression, shooting a final-round 74 and finishing seventh overall with a two-round score of 155.
Bowdie Fox and
Ryan Badger also competed well, tying for 12th (158) and 26th (165), respectively.
HEAR FROM COACH BUIE: "We saw solid performances across the board today with all the men fighting to shoot in the 70's on a tough course. Ryder was great in his MSUB tournament debut, Kaopun continued his good start to the season, Aubrey had another great week as a freshman,
Payton Black did well in his first event of the season, and Mark also impressed in his collegiate debut."
Among a competitive eight-team field, the Yellowjacket women carded a 641 (320-321) to finish in second place while the women's (B) team was close behind in third place at 659 (334-325). The course also played difficult on the women's side, showing averages of 88.14 in round one and 86.56 in round two.
No other than
Orraya Tipasathien was first into the clubhouse for the Yellowjackets and the entire tournament of 50 competitors. Tipasathien went 73-74 to finish with a two-round score of 147 to take home the victory with three strokes to spare. For the B team, Rackel Rerick had a career-best performance, shooting a personal-best 76 in round one and finishing fourth overall with a two-round total of 157, beating her previous two-round best by five shots.
A tightly packed group of Yellowjackets followed.
Ella Tannenberger tied for 11th at 164 (81-83).
Pygmy Kompoj and
Kyleigh McGowen tied for 15th, each shooting 165 (Kompoj: 80-85, McGowen: 86-79).
Hanna Boyd (B) took 17th with a 166 (86-80), and
Hannah Adams (B) finished tied for 18th at 168 (83-85).
Rounding it out for the Yellowjacket women was
Chloe Van Strien (B) who tied for 23
rd place and a two-round score of 172 (89-83),
Haylee Adams who had a 36-hole score of 174 (93-81) tying for 28
th, and
Emy Cambuzat who took 33
rd place at 177 (88-89).
HEAR FROM COACH BUIE: "Jan picked up her sixth win today, besides the triple bogey she played a near flawless tournament. I was a little disappointed again in our finish, we finished the final five holes poorly as a team and it cost us the win. Rachel had her best career finish in fifth, while also shooting a tournament best 76 in the opening round."
