HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Montana State University Billings women's golf team opened up their 2024-25 spring campaign at the Battle at Hilton Head where they took on a 14-team field that featured four teams ranked inside the top 35 nationally. Right on the South Carolina Beach, the 'Jackets played the scenic Robert Trent Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes Golf Club, playing 5,934 yards.
The Yellowjackets took 13
th place overall as a team, ranking 11
th in the tournament with 13 total birdies and 12
th in pars with 111. Amongst the loaded field was #2 Wingate University, #26 Lincoln Memorial, #33 Carson-Newman, and #35 UIndy. In three rounds, MSUB scored a 995 (339-325-331) while averaging 5.62 strokes on par fives, 4.82 strokes on par fours, and 3.58 on par threes.
Orraya Tipasathien, who is ranked 95
th individually in the nation and 24
th in the west region led the way for MSUB with a three-round score of 241 (85-75-81). This was four strokes over her season average at 76.4 which would be the lowest season scoring average in school history. Tipasathien topped the leaderboard on the team, tying for 36
th place amongst the field of 75 competitors while ranking 17
th in the tournament for birdies with five, and 19
th in the tournament for scoring average on par fives at 5.17.
Next on the leaderboard was
Gia Vargas who tied for 43
rd place overall, coming into the clubhouse with a three-round score of 244. Vargas shot an opening round 85, followed by her best round of the tournament (78), and rounded it out with an 81 while ranking 35
th amongst the field on par threes with a 3.42 average.
Ella Tannenberger came in third for the Yellowjackets after posting a 254 (90-82-82), tying for 56
th place. Rounding it out for the MSUB women was
Pygmy Kompoj who tied for 62
nd at 256 (79-90-87) and
Haylee Adams who tied for 73
rd at 280 (92-97-91).
THE BUZZ: Orraya Tipasathien was named Intermountain Health Player of the Day after posting a 75 on the second round of day one while
Gia Vargas was named Intermountain Health Player of the Day for day two after posting an 81 in the final round.
