MSUB Comes Up Just Short in Competitive Clash with NNU

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Montana State University Billings volleyball team (1-10, 0-6 GNAC) dropped a tight three-set match to Northwest Nazarene (2-10, 1-4 GNAC) on Saturday afternoon at Alterowitz Gym, falling by scores of 25-22, 25-21, and 25-21.
 
Despite the sweep, the Yellowjackets were competitive throughout, finishing with just three fewer total points scored than the Nighthawks and leading in multiple statistical categories: kills (39-37), service aces (7-2), and assists (35-33).
 
Allie Dorman paced MSUB with an efficient all-around performance, recording 12 kills on a .417 hitting percentage, along with six digs, three service aces, and a block assist. Addison Holcomb added 10 kills, eight digs, an ace, and a block assist, while Jordin Taulua chipped in nine kills and five digs. Setter Kenzie Allen notched a double-double with 31 assists (10.3 per set) and 12 digs.  
The opening set of the afternoon opened with four straight points from the Yellowjackets, all behind the serve of Dorman. After the Nighthawks claimed their first point of the match MSUB went on another 3-0 run to take a 7-1 advantage. NNU then answered with a 7-2 run to bring them back within one, but the 'Jackets responded with a 5-1 run of their own highlighted by kills from Allen and Dorman and a service ace from Stella Scott. The Yellowjackets continued to hold their lead until it was 21-15, when the Nighthawks caught fire with a eight straight unanswered points and would go on to take the first set 25-22.
 
Similar to the first set, the Yellowjackets jumped out ahead to a 3-0 lead, capitalizing on a trio of attacking errors from Northwest Nazarene. From there, the Nighthawks slowly chipped away, tying it up at seven apiece until MSUB went on a 4-1 run backed by a pair of kills from Dorman. Again, the Yellowjackets were able to extend their lead late in the set to 19-14, but NNU would respond with a 10-2 run to complete a 25-21 comeback win.
 
What turned out to be the final set of the afternoon was a true back-and-forth battle, featuring five total ties until NNU was able to take a 10-7 lead. Behind Avarey Stuff's serve, the Yellowjackets were able to regain an 11-10 advantage with four straight unanswered points. More back-and-forth volleyball continued as the Nighthawks retook a two-point lead, followed by MSUB doing the same at 18-16. Northwest Nazarene then did what they had done all game, finishing the set with a 6-0 run to take the set 25-21 and ultimately win the match.
