BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings women's soccer team finished on the wrong side of a match against Western Washington University, falling 4-0 at home in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
Hosting the program's annual Pink Game, the Yellowjackets (2-5-0, 1-2-0 GNAC) would be unable to start a winning streak following the team's win last Saturday, coming up short against a difficult Vikings (4-1-3, 2-0-1 GNAC) side that is receiving votes in the national poll. The Vikings took control of the match in the early stages and would never look back, outshooting MSUB in total 24-3, and putting eight looks on goal to the Yellowjacket's zero.
Much of the early stages of the first half would be spent in the Viking's attacking half, as the Yellowjackets were forced to play on the defense early. And that pressure would finally break in the 24
th minute when a bit of excellent team play would see Western Washington take the lead from the foot of Claire Potter. The Yellowjackets would show a bit of attacking promise shortly following the restart, with
Liberty Palmer and
Kambryn Smith narrowly missing shots on goal with a pair of quality chances, but despite showing some attacking promise, MSUB's hopes for a comeback would be dampened when a shot initially saved by MSUB would deflect back to Layne Davis, doubling the Viking's lead.
The Vikings would once again look strong out of the gates in the second half, with Emily Holdridge making the lead 3-0 with a goal in the 55
th minute. Both teams would change around their lineups as the half wore on, with both teams rotating to give players valuable experience. But it would be Potter who would score Western Washington's final goal of the match, giving her a brace and the visitors a 4-0 lead, which they would hold until the end of the match.
Palmer would lead MSUB with a pair of shots in the game, while
Kambryn Smith attempted one. In net,
Natalie Weinmaster made four saves.
THE BUZZ: Briel Powers was named as the Intermountain Health Player of the Game…
Maddie Tracy made her debut for the Yellowjackets in the match, becoming the 13
th Yellowjacket to make their regular season debut for MSUB this season… the 'Jackets are now 3-30-2 all-time when facing the Vikings.
