DURANGO, Colo. – The Montana State University Billings men's soccer program wrapped up non-conference play against #9 ranked Fort Lewis College late Saturday night with a 2-2 draw.
The match got a late start after a two-hour delay for lightning, but the Jackets' still came out strong at kickoff. The first half was a defensive battle, remaining 0-0 through the first 45 minutes.
Jackson Hanley marked the first shot on goal for the Yellowjackets in the third minute, which was stopped by Fort Lewis goalie Lucas Martin.
Bjarne Fedkenhauer,
Sam Kemmer, and
Florian Senf also presented potential scoring chances, but the Jackets' were held scoreless at the break. Reigning GNAC Defensive Player of the Week
Andrew Schoenen recorded two saves in the first half, including a well-executed slide tackle to stuff a breakaway goal.
The Yellowjackets' first goal came at the 48-minute mark on a free kick from
Guillermo Gonzalez that was brushed into the net on a header from freshman defender
Arlo Follet. The goal marks his first as a Yellowjacket and another notch to the strong scoring threat the defensive line has been so far this season. The Jackets' added another goal in the 58
th minute from
Bjarne Fedkenhauer, who picked the defenders pass and pocketed the goal just outside the keepers reach. This tallies Fedkenhauer's second goal on the year.
What looked to be a ranked upset for the Jackets' was suddenly subdued by Fort Lewis, when Skyhawks' midfielder Fabrizio Aguilera scored two goals in the final two minutes to bring the final score to an even two.
The Yellowjackets conclude non-conference play with a record of 1-2-3 and will have a week off of games to prepare for the start of conference season.
THE BUZZ: Bjarne Fedkenhauer was selected as the Intermountain Health Player of the Game, recording one goal, one shot on goal, and three shot attempts.
