BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings Athletic Department revealed Wednesday the newest round of inductees into the Yellowjacket Hall of Fame and Distinction, with a total of five former student-athletes and distinguished donors set to be inducted as a part of the 2025 class.
Standout men's soccer player Dave Austin, All-American women's basketball star
Alisha Breen, baseball great Steen Fredrickson, and distinguished donors Barb and Carl Ueland make up this year's group of hall of famers. The five will be inducted in a ceremony on February 14, 2025, at the Double Tree Hotel, before being honored once more at halftime of the men's basketball game the following night.
"Honoring our student-athletes, coaches, supporters, etc. and their accomplishments will always be special to me," said MSUB athletic director Michael Bazemore. "They provide great examples for our current and future student-athletes of what can be accomplished as a Yellowjacket. I would like to formally congratulate the 2025 hall of fame class, and I look forward to celebrating their accomplishments during our event."
A member of some of the first teams fielded in MSUB men's soccer history, Dave Austin established himself as one of the program's first star players. Playing from 1997-2000, Austin became the first Yellowjacket in program history to receive regional honors, when he was selected to the NSCAA All-Far West Region Third Team in 1998, earning All-Pac West second team honors the same season. Austin finished his Yellowjacket career with 27 goals, a total that today is tied for second most in program history, while his 61 total points remain third most accumulated by a Yellowjacket in their career. Austin's 68 total games played in his MSUB career also rank as the tenth most in program history.
Arguably the most decorated student-athlete in the history of MSUB athletics,
Alisha Breen finished her Yellowjacket career with her name plastered across the women's basketball record books. Breen finished her career with 2,001 total points scored, a program record that stands to this day. She also finished as the all-time leader in free throws made, while playing in more games than any other women's basketball player with 130. Breen also holds top marks for points and free throws made in a season, while ranking in the top ten of almost every all-time statistical category following a playing career that spanned from 2013-2018. In her career, Breen helped to guide the Yellowjacket to the program's first ever GNAC Regular Season Championship in 2013-14, and GNAC Tournament Championship in 2017-2018, and was a member of three NCAA Regional teams, including one run to the Sweet Sixteen in 2013-14, and an NCAA West Regional victory and Elite Eight berth in 2017-18. Breen finished her career with both D2CCA and WBCA All-American First Team awards from the 2017-18 season. She remains the only player in program history to earn D2CCA West Region Player of the Year and GNAC Championships MVP honors, while being the second player in program history to earn GNAC Player of the Year. Breen was a two-time All-GNAC First Teamer, awarded All-GNAC Honorable Mention one time, and was a three-time Academic All-GNAC selection.
A multi-time All-Region selection, Steen Fredrickson pitched from 2016-2019 for MSUB, helping the Yellowjackets earn three GNAC Regular Season Championships in four seasons, along with the program's first GNAC Tournament Championship in 2019. The right-hander finished his career as a staple at the top of MSUB's pitching records, including the second most wins in program history with 19. Fredrickson also holds the ninth lowest ERA in program history at 5.34, the third lowest batting average against with .249, and the third highest strikeout total with 209. Fredrickson, whose 212.1 career innings rank fourth most, and 31 starts tie for the fifth most in team history, was an NCBWA Honorable Mention in his junior and senior seasons, while picking up ABCA All-Region Second Team honors as well in 2019. He became the first Yellowjacket to win GNAC Pitcher of the Year in 2018, and was selected to the ALL-GNAC First Team two times, while tying for the program record for GNAC Pitcher of the Week awards with four, and becoming a three-time Academic All-GNAC honoree.
Longtime supporters of both the University at large and Yellowjacket Athletics, Barb and Carl Ueland have been involved with Montana State University Billings for more than 50 years. Carl, who graduated from MSUB (then Eastern Montana College) in 1970, competed in both cross country and track and field in his time as a Yellowjacket, before completing his degree in biology, with a minor in chemistry. The two have continued to give back to MSU Billings, continually supporting both the College of Health Professions and Science, while establishing the Ueland Athletic Scholarships, which are awarded to multiple Yellowjacket student-athletes each year, to help support them as they pursue their academic and athletic goals.
