PORTLAND, Ore. – Following an impressive week in which the Montana State University Billings men's soccer team collected a pair of positive results on the road in Texas, goalkeeper
Andrew Schoenen was recognized with GNAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, as announced by the conference Monday afternoon.
"Andrew has been great for us in goal," said head coach
Paul Cuevas. "He's been stepping up for us as a true freshman when the team needs him. We saw that this last week with him making some big saves and doing what needed to be done. His confidence and maturity continue to grow game by game, and I have no doubt he will continue to play a big role on the pitch for us."
A native of Great Falls, Montana, the freshman Schoenen was instrumental in net for the Yellowjackets, collecting back-to-back clean sheets, and completing the first two shutouts of his collegiate career. Schoenen opened the week on Thursday against Sul Ross State by making six saves, helping to guide the Yellowjackets to their first victory of the campaign, triumphing 3-0 over the Lobos. He then increased his save total to seven in MSUB's second match of the week, helping the 'Jackets earn a point in a 0-0 draw against Texas A&M International. Schoenen was the only goalkeeper in the GNAC to shut out his opponents in both games last week, with his combined 13 saves leading all shot stoppers in that span.
Schoenen also moved into a tie for most shutouts in the conference with two. Through four games this season, the freshman has made a total of 17 saves, third most in the GNAC, averaging 4.25 saves per game, while collecting a 77.3% save percentage.
The Yellowjacket men's soccer team wraps up non-conference play this week with a pair of games in Durango, Colorado, opening things on Thursday against Colorado Mesa University before taking on Fort Lewis University Saturday. Live coverage of both of this week's games can be found
